According to the Miami Herald sports writer Manny Navarro the Ducks are picking up steam on the nation’s top running back recruit for the 2009 class in Bryce Brown in Rivals.com’s recruiting rankings.
Brown is 6′ and 215 pounds and adds a power and finesse game that is rare among most high school running backs. Brown is currently committed to the Miami Hurricanes and the Canes happen to be where his older brother Aurthur Brown a freshman linebacker is playing.
As a junior Brown rushed for 26 touchdowns and over 1800 yards while earning All-City and All-State awards as Junior for Wichita East in Wichita, KS. So there’s no hope you say since his brother plays for Miami and he is already committed to Miami. Not so fast Duck fans, there is a chance to land Brown.
Bryce Brown happens to be best friends with Chris Harper who is currently the true freshman quarterback for the Ducks who has caught the attention of the staff and fans and is becoming a hot commodity for the Ducks so far in the early season. It’s always been thought that the Ducks should have a shot with Brown since Harper is at Oregon. Now we have proof that Brown is indeed looking at Oregon and is very interested in what Oregon is doing in Eugene
When Brown was asked if other schools are after him and if he’s listening Brown said this:
It’s really Missouri, Oregon, Clemson and Miami. The two main schools I really want to consider (aside from UM) are Clemson and Oregon, but more Oregon. I’m very impressed with their offense and the way coach [Chip] Kelly coaches The way he runs his offense is amazing. He’s always getting balls to his playmakers.
Then when Brown was asked if there was a chance he could end up somewhere else other than Miami Brown had this to say:
If I had to say a school, I’d say Oregon. But I’ve never seen it. It’s a free trip, a good opportunity to check it out.
Oregon is picking up steam in the recruiting trails and landing a player that is the caliber of Bryce Brown could really create a domino effect with other top notch recruits looking at Oregon and even committing. There is still a lot of work to be done before the Ducks can get Brown to decommit from Miami and then commit to Oregon. Most importantly is getting Bryce Brown out to Eugene for a visit.
Now, this is simply a rumor, but I did get a nice tip from someone who is in the know on Oregon recruiting that Brown will indeed be visiting Oregon. There are also a few articles from both Scout and Rivals that have Bryce Brown saying he will take other visits and Oregon is always in the forefront of the group of schools he wants to visit.
In my years of following Oregon football the biggest hurdle to pass is getting the recruit to visit. Once the Ducks’ staff can bring in a recruit for a visit the chances to land him sky-rocket up. So until Bryce Brown sets a date for an official visit to Oregon this is simply a nice show to watch.
