In April, Oregon was one of the leaders for Michael Clay. November was no different as Clay named Oregon as one of his leaders. Persistence paid off for the ducks in early January when Clay committed to Oregon. He is one of three highly touted linebackers to commit to Oregon in a two week span. With 107 tackles, 10 passes defended (including an interception), and 3.5 sacks, he brings versatility to the table. At 6’0” 215lbs with a 4.6 40-yard dash, Clay describes himself as a linebacker that plays fast from sideline to sideline but still with enough discipline to contain others.
About 10 other teams were fighting for Clay’s services, but Coach Nick Aliotti, his primary recruiter, was able to land him over Cal, Washington, Washington State, Utah, Colorado, and others. Not only did Coach Aliotti make an impression on him, but also Clay was impressed with the business school and the town of Eugene. “The campus, the players already there, the facilities, and the opportunity to play on a defense are what made me choose the ducks,” says Clay.
Although Clay’s high school team was left out of the state game, he stayed optimistic and was pleased with his senior season. Clay said, “Personally I would not change anything about this year. This is the most fun I’ve ever had. As a team though we were left out of the state game, but we were able to win our section and be named one of the top 30 teams in the nation.” Playing in a competitive area has shown the type of athlete Clay really is. He also played basketball in high school, however football is his only focus.
Already fully qualified, Clay is looking forward to this summer when he plans to arrive in Eugene. “What I’m looking forward to during summer and fall practices is to know the defense and also get to know all the players on the team. I do not know if I will red-shirt because I am able to long snap as well,” says Clay. And something you probably didn’t know, Clay is half-black and half-Mexican. Now you know. Get ready, because Michael Clay is coming.
