how do we make up the 20 points lost when galen rupp graduated? this certainly helps.

essentially, a change in the ncaa rules and the preliminary heats means it'll be easier for some athletes to double up on events. for example, andrew wheating has been one of the best 800 and 1500 runners in the country for awhile now, but has only been able to run the 800 due to how the two events for situated/timed at the ncaa meet. now, he can do both.

what if matthew centrowitz can win the 1500 (a favorite last year, he suffered a leg fracture right before the ncaa meet), and wheating can place, say, third? there's 16 points we didn't have last year. to say nothing of the newcomers...

That's cool. I never understood why the NCAA doesn't do more to ensure that athletes at least have the opportunity to compete in similar events.

Wow, I didn't realize that his injury was eventually diagnosed as a leg fracture. Good thing he pulled up. Sounds like a tough kid. BTW he broke Rupp's indoor mile record this weekend, so your scenario is very possible.
