so the team is 33-20, which 3.5 off boston's mark for the best record in baseball, and they're 4.5 up on anaheim for the second wild card spot (and 1 game back of houston for the west lead).

how are they doing this? uh, i don't know. the offense helped pick up a weak starting rotation for the majority of the season, but ever since robinson cano went and got himself suspended the rotation and the bullpen have been money while the offense has floundered (though they are coming up with timely hits late in games, which counts for something).

paxton is in a groove, throwing six consecutive quality starts where he's thrown a no-hitter, gone the distance twice, and has only given up 8 ER.

gonzalez is also in a groove, not allowing an earned run in his last three starts. he's also developing some stamina and going longer into games.

leblanc and leake are getting it done more often than not. felix is our worst pitcher. up is down, day is night.

bullpen just got much stronger with the trade for alex colome.

i believe dee gordon is expected back thursday. his absence has played as big a role in the offense's struggles as cano.

We've won so many games by 1 run, I honestly think it's a little bit of luck and grit. The dominoes are finally falling in our favor (for now).

turns out that once every 15 years luck swings our way for a few weeks.

11 of our last 13 games have been decided by 1 run lol. Thankfully we've won 9 of those.

Seattle has 16 one-run wins, best in the majors.

Mariners playing good baseball. Felix was in trouble a couple of times but worked himself out, went 8 innings for the 2-1 win. Mariners are in first place and head to Houston for a two game set starting on Tuesday.

Never thought I'd see the day since since what like 2003 that the mariners would be leading their division in June.

Thoughts on the draft?

Mariners take game 1 in Houston, 7-1, 3 run homer for Seager, 2 run for Zunino, solo shot for Segura. Mariners take 2 game lead.

the first rounder from stetson absolutely dominated his small conference. he pitched a lot of innings this year so i think the plan is to have him pitch a few times in everett and then shut him down for the season. high 90s fastball and he's got pretty fair command of 4 pitches.

dipoto loves college players (over high schoolers with potentially higher ceilings) and he proved it again going with 10 college kids in the first 10 rounds. the outfielder from louisville in the 2nd round and the catcher from florida state in the 3rd round were both nice picks, the louisville kid is a multi-tool talent and the florida state kid's got an advance bat with adequate skill behind the plate. dipoto opted for two talented/productive sec pitchers in the 4th and 5th rounds.

m's farm system is absolute garbage (15 years of god awful drafting prior to the current regime, and the current regime has shipped off some of the talent we did have in trades to help the major league club) so hopefully dipoto gets more hits than misses this draft. the whole organization needs a talent shot in the arm.

Well my perusal of Lookout Landing says that the focus on the draft so far is about restocking the Farm with players who have a quicker chance of making it the show, especially since this is a team that is leading its division so that has naturally led to the college selections. They also took some players who might be trending up after having only 1 real breakout season like the Irish-Japanese kid Joey Takeshi O'Brien who is a 2-way player at OF and as a Submarine pitcher and played with a wood bat this past year.

Let's get that Irish-Japanese pipeline established!

Bandwagon time, baby!
