I'm still wondering what FA Cruz does? I can't see why he would stay amidst the rebuilding.

he wouldn't stay, and we wouldn't offer him. we need to give that DH spot to vogelbach to see if we have anything there.

love me some nelson cruz. i hope he gets one last good contract and hits 35+ bombs for a contender.

A 3 team deal sends Edwin Encarnacion to Mariners.

Carlos Santana is going back to Cleveland, where he was a fan favorite. Edwin Encarnacion is headed to Seattle — no telling how long he’ll stick there.
The star hitters were swapped for each other Thursday, part of a three-team trade that also involved Tampa Bay as the MLB winter meetings wrapped up.
Cleveland sent infielder Yandy Diaz and minor league right-hander Cole Sulser to the Rays. Cleveland also acquired first baseman Jake Bauers from Tampa Bay, while the busy Mariners wound up with a draft pick. Tampa Bay will send $5 million to Seattle and the Mariners will pay $6 million to Cleveland.
"We'll see how it goes with Edwin, whether he stays with us or he moves on to another destination," Seattle assistant general manager Justin Hollander said.

he'll assuredly be dealt relatively soon, at worst he'll be shipped somewhere prior to the deadline.

there's a bit of extra money involved and some other minor pieces, but we more or less shed the 5 years/$120m cano is owed for 1 year/$20m of encarnacion, salary we'll either dump or pay the bulk of in exchange for prospects.

In the non surprise news: https://www.mlb.com/mariners/news/nelso ... -302213490

The Twins have added plenty of power to their lineup this offseason, and their latest acquisition is perhaps the mightiest of all.

Sources confirmed to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand and Jon Paul Morosi on Thursday that the Twins have agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract with 38-year-old slugger Nelson Cruz, who will give Minnesota a needed upgrade at the designated hitter position. The deal reportedly includes a $12 million club option for 2020 with a $300,000 buyout.

A rebuilding Mariners team added a strong piece to its pitching rotation as Japanese standout Yusei Kikuchi agreed to a four-year deal with Seattle, MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi reported on Monday night.

A source confirms to MLB.com that the unique deal is for $43 million over an initial three years, with a $13 million player option for 2022. But the option can potentially be replaced by an additional four-year, $66 million extension by the club that would convert the deal to seven years total.

a nice surprise. buzz had him relocating to a california team.

he's perhaps a touch older than the rest of the core we're going for, but he'll be in his prime when the m's are ready to contend.

haha sorry, that should read "when the current front office thinks the team might develop into contenders."

I'm looking forward to the next season with more anticipation than any in several seasons. Last season the first half started so well that not only Mariners fans had them getting to the playoffs. Of course the A's, under former M's Manager Bob Melvin, caught fire and blew the Mariners away.
This off season Dipoto is shaking things up. Houston went from 100 L's to WS champs. Getting rid of Diaz was a hard, but great move. He led MLB in Saves, but nothing came of them. Building a core, strengthening the Farm System, is the way to end the longest streak of missing the playoffs.

Not a Mariner fan, but was happy to see Edgar get into the HOF. The teams he was on were fun to watch, with Junior, Big Unit, Bone, Arod, Dan Wilson. Edgar always seemed to pick up the big hit when they needed it most.
