Cal student-athletes closer to getting paid, despite NCAA

A California bill proposing to allow college athletes to earn compensation off of their name, image and likeness moved one step closer to passage Tuesday afternoon, when the State Assembly Higher Education Committee passed it with support from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers.
Senate Bill 206, the “Fair Pay to Play Act,” passed 11-0 with one abstention and will now advance to the Assembly Appropriations Committee, where it will likely be heard in August after California lawmakers return from their summer recess.

It was brought up on ESPN sometime this morning that if California actually gets this done, despite NCAA protestations, what a recruiting advantage it would be; USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford "Come play with us, and get paid."

Without a doubt the NCAA would declare any institution which directly paid student athletes ineligible for post season play. The school would also probably be prohibited from appearing on NCAA sanctioned broadcasts, possibly from participating in any NCAA sanctioned event. California schools could face the choice of semi-pro level TV coverage, no bowls or post season and an intra- California schedule OR decline paying the players and maintain the status quo until changes occur nationwide. Which do you think they would choose?Merganzer wrote:It was brought up on ESPN sometime this morning that if California actually gets this done, despite NCAA protestations, what a recruiting advantage it would be; USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford "Come play with us, and get paid."

I feel this law passes it could get interesting. Other power house schools won't keep calm with California schools having that type of advantage in recruiting. The Feds have no teeth when it comes to over ruling state law, (pot). I wonder how the NCAA will fair against state law if a school chooses to pay a student athlete.

You are right, but Alan nailed it with his domino theory. The NCAA would step up and deal with the Cal schools. But the momentum that generated this bill in California will find life in more states.maxduck wrote:Without a doubt the NCAA would declare any institution which directly paid student athletes ineligible for post season play. What is college football going to look like in two years? I doubt anyone can say for sure. This is going to be wild.

If the kids make a few bucks, I’m good with that. They deserve it. But if college goes full semi pro D League, I’ll start full focus on the NFL. It’s better pro sport.

So what would this mean for tv money for the schools? They would get no revenue from the NCAA the only real money they would have coming in is from seat sales. Just about everything is sanctioned through the NCAA. At that point they couldn’t afford to pay the athletes. I’m all for it, but until all the big boys are willing to walk away from the NCAA and pay any restitution I don’t see this working out for the Cal schools.

And another thing, So. Cal. is the most Liberal place on the planet do you think they will get away with paying football more than swimming? What about mens sports vs women’s sports......equal pay. This is not a political statement just another part of the formalities they would have to work out. It’s not like they will be able to pay them much more than they already do
