USC’s decision to hire Sarkasian over Orgeron or Peterson will probably go down as the worst coaching hire of the 2010s.

In a bit of a surprise, Mark Dantonio has stepped down as Michigan State HC. Some early names popping up are Pat Narduzzi and Luke Fickell.

I don't really see it as that much of a surprise--MSU was a dumpster fire, he wasn't going to be able to rebuild a program in that bad of shape.

And it's the same thing at UW and WSU, coaches don't bail out on good/great situations.

Hours after meeting with donors in Denver at a fundraiser, Colorado HC Mel Tucker left to become Michigan State's new HC.

According to the report by The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, Tucker would more than double his salary of about $2.7 million, and nearly double Colorado’s coaching salary pool, which was $3.15 million in 2019, and include an increase in the strength and conditioning staff budget and resources.

Football coaching salaries are out of hand. $6 million for one year college head coaching experience and a 5-7 record?

In recent history U of O has always been the leader in new trends in college football, I hope they are willing to open their wallet and keep up with this one! 6 mil to a 5-7 coach from Colorado, 900k to a cornerbacks coach... of course they did pay 1.7 mil to a short term, Pepsi crazy DC!

If there's a great reason for paying players, it's that D1 coaches make $8M a year while assistants make $2M per year -- At public colleges, no less.

Personally I am of the opinion that such salaries are beyond obscene... It's no longer a sport but instead is nothing more than a money making machine..And to say that is a desirable thing is beyond me...Whats next on the agenda? Paid High School athletes? Oh wait, that crap was happening back in the 60's and 70's and look where we are now...I'll just shake my head in disgust...

He's making more than Cristobal at this point--and it really illustrates how far behind the Pac-12 is in revenue that a 5-7 coach with one season of experience is making more than the guy who just won the Rose Bowl.

Listening to Clownzono yesterday, he reported this for the Big 10 head coaches. Shaw is the highest paid PAC 12 coach, his salary would put him at #12 highest paid head coach in the Big 10........ yea, PAC 12 is lagging in a lot of areas

This turns out to be wrong. Tucker will make a base salary of $3.8M plus $400k annual bonus for breathing for $4.2M. Incentives could push him as high as over $5.4M.

That's still a lot of money, but isn't $5.4M in salary.

Many reports also list $1.3 million in supplemental income for a total of $5.5 million per year. Also potential incentive income.

Hmm. I was passing along what FootballScoop had in its most recent report. I think those incentives might be double-counted (by calling them supplemental income and incentives).

Excerpts from the Detroit Free Press

Tucker’s contract, which the university released Thursday afternoon, will bring him at least $5.5 million annually over his six-year contract, more than $1 million over Dantonio’s $4.3 million dollar deal he had before he retired Feb. 4.

Tucker is set to earn $3.8 million in base pay, $1.2 million in supplemental pay from such things as camps and media obligations, and $100,000 in shoe and apparel money. The university also will give Tucker a $400,000 annual retention bonus so long as he remains head coach that will trigger every February, since he signed the contract Wednesday when he was hired. His total does not include how much Tucker will make for running MSU’s summer camps, which is part of a separate contract which was not made available.

Tucker also has a number of performance-based bonus opportunities in his contract as well:

• $25,000 for being named Big Ten coach of the year

• $50,000 for being named AFCA national coach of the year

• $75,000 for a bowl appearance as the Big Ten's No. 4 team or lower

• $125,000 for a non-College Football Playoff bowl appearance as the Big Ten's No. 2 or 3 team

• $250,000 for a New Year's Six bowl game

• $275,000 for a CFP semifinal appearance

• $300,000 for reaching the CFP final

• $375,000 for winning the national championship
