Hello From Ames, Iowa!

Hello Duck Nation! Looks like we get you guys in our bowl game. Looking forward to it. Just to bad they won't allow fans. We are still pretty damn salty about the Conference Championship game loss but are looking forward to tussling with the Ducks!

Typically Duck fans are what we'll go by collectively.

It's also the University of Oregon/UO; we're not Oklahoma/OU.

Is your SB Nation site the top ISU fan site or is there another one? We're largely a civil bunch here minus any friendly ribbing.

Likewise. Cyclone Fanatic is the main board with ample traffic. https://cyclonefanatic.com/forum/

It's free. I see there's currently a thread going on you guys.

Welcome to the chat! Always love a spirited opposing fan member jump onto this site. Heard a lot of great things about ISU but only watched a quarter of one game of theirs this year. Any insight to share on what your team is bringing to the table?
Looking forward to the game!!

Our O-line is banged up. If you pass rush is decent, it will be a big advantage for you guys.

Our FG kicker is OK (and has an epic last name) but for some reason we can't find a decent kick off kicker and our kick off defense is super bad so if you guys have a burner, you will be in good shape there.

Our Pass Rush is what led to us beating USC.

Our new FG kicker is a first year kicker who we're all infatuated with for making the simple kick in what feels like the first time in over a decade.

Mykael Wright is a capable returner and had 2 TDs on returns last year (but none this year) so if you think its a bad area on your team, its something to certainly watch for.

Welcome! Pretty much any fan base is welcome here as long as they’re civil, except for Husky fans, Beaver fans, and North Dakota State fans as they’ve shown to be incapable of being civil.

Pass rush. Hmmm... We have one superstar pass rusher otherwise next to nothing.

Kick returner ... We have one (#2) who is really dangerous but use him as a last resort only as he is indispensable at corner.

An OK FG Kicker? what is that? Duck fans are unfamiliar with that concept.

We do have a QB who is in a 3 consecutive Half slump which is what we'll all be watching to see how that works out.

Oregon has one of the most talented pass rushers in Kayvon Thibodeaux. Guy is a freak athlete and was the nation’s top recruit in 2018. Any tackle that has to take him on one and one is gonna have a tough day. USC made that mistake and they paid dearly. Even if he doesn’t get sacks he disrupts plays a lot and allows someone else to get the sack. We also have a very talented young LB in Noah Sewell, he was the #2 ranked LB last year (we also got the #1 but he’s injured) and he plays with a high motor and loves to hit, but he’s young and undisciplined and is known to run himself out of plays or just flat out whiff on tackle attempts. Overall the pass rush has been inconsistent but the last two games they have shown drastic improvement. Before that they were soft.

Wright is our return man, he’s fast and if he gets decent blocking he will run right past the coverage team. This year he hasn’t had as many explosive returns but the blocking on the return game hasn’t done very well.

Overall our biggest weakness is QB play. Tyler Shough is a turnover waiting to happen. He started off the season OK and has decent skills (OK runner and decent long ball, also was pretty good at the triple option), but he gets rattled way too easily and once he’s rattled he makes WTF passes to multiple defenders without a receiver in the area. We have some really good WR’s who were showing off early in the season but since our QB play has completely disappeared they haven’t been able to get any action as Shough can’t get the ball to them. His range is about 3 yards down the field and after that it feels like an interception is more likely than a reception. He also always hands off on the read so no need to keep someone spying on him.

The second biggest weakness is RB. Our top RB is Verdell but he’s so injury prone. Doesn’t seem like you can expect more than 2 games in a row from him. After him bunch of subpar RB’s who sometimes have good games but aren’t guys you can rely on to get you 1 yard on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1.

Besides those positions Oregon has no shortage of talent, but they also have no shortage on youth so they can be wildly inconsistent. Oregon is the youngest team in the nation and it certainly shows sometimes.

Honestly, I don't even think he's regressed. He was throwing picks in his first game but Stanford just couldn't catch them.

We have a backup QB named Anthony Brown who was a three-year starter at Boston College before transferring here. He FINALLY played situationally against USC and looked pretty good. Many Duck fans hope he starts over Shough in the Fiesta. If he does, all bets are off... hard to say how he'd do, but he looked much more calm out there.

Our pass rush has been pretty bad all year until the USC game. I'm honestly not sure how we managed to get so much pressure on the USC quarterback last Friday. If I were an Iowa State fan, I'd feel pretty confident about your QB having time to make throws. I could be wrong (and hope I am), but the "norm" for Oregon this season is to give opposing QBs lots of time.

I'd give our RBs slightly more credit than OregonFan4Life. It's true Verdell has been a no-show this year, but his backup (Travis Dye, who is now presumably our starter) is actually pretty decent despite being undersized. And against USC we gave snaps to a redshirt freshman RB who ran surprisingly well. So we're capable, but we don't have a world-beating RB like you have.

Otherwise, welcome to our forum and here's to a good game! Always love hearing from fans in other parts of the country.
Willie Taggart is a dick.

Here is my assessment of our team

QB - Though has the yips right now and has regressed all season. He throws between 3-7 errant/awful passes a game. A lot of his poor passes have been dropped by defenders, but I personally hope we start Anthony Brown

RB - We rotate a good amount. Very average group overall

TE - Solid blockers and decent pass catchers. We typically keep them close to the line but run a lot of wham blocks with them which sets up drag routes which lead to wide open big gains 1-2 times a game

WR - Solid group but our QB play hasn't shown their potential really

OL - Interior of our O-line is below average. Especially RG and Center

D-Line - Kayvon Thibedoux is a beast all around. The rest of our line is solid but slow. We play best when we play our smaller but more athletic lineup

LB - Lots of injuries and inexperience. The potential is there but we have played walk ons at several points due to all the injuries. Noah Sewell is disruptive 2-3 times a game but also overplays and loses his containment and assignment several times

CB - Wright and Lenoir are both fantastic and lock down the outside

S - We typically play 3-3-5 with 3 safeties. It's our weakest position. We had 2 all-conference safeties opt out this season and our current group is smaller and slower. Good slot play and curl routes 10-15 yards in the middle of the field with our soft zone coverage is the best way to succeed against our defense.

Well the DE scares the crap of me. Purdy doesn't get sacked a lot and can be mobile but if you watch our second game against Oklahoma, the O-line is where we lost the game. ISU's defense tends to clamp down as the game moves long so we are usually not out of games. If you don't put up some points in the first qtr, you might be in some trouble.
