Not a big surprise really. This pretty much assures that he never plays in Eugene. Too bad.

Here's what he actually had to say

But Matzek left the Ducks' door open with his answer:

"Well, that's why I'm excited. Oregon's going to hopefully give me a chance to play first base. But we'll see what Colorado has to say."

Can't really blame him if he bails. Good luck to him wherever he ends up.

So Braxton Lane hasn't been drafted yet (through 26). Was he projected be a high draft and if he isn't does he plan on going to school? Could be good news for both the Duck football and baseball teams!

The MLB draft is a three day deal. Today is the first 111 picks. And Lane isn't expected to go until the 5th round or later. So he will most likely be picked sometime tomorrow.

its not a good enough signing bonus in the 5th round for him to forgo college IMO. 3-5th round selections have only a 32% chance of making the majors...and who would want to get stuck in the minors for years making only peanuts..... a question was asked
Q: What are minor league salaries like?
A: First year players get paid $850 per month, reguardless of where they are drafted or what level they are playing at. Many teams have a graduating minor league salary scale based on service and playing level that pre-determines their salary after the first year.In addition, players get an extra $14- $18 per day meal money when they are on the road, depending on what level they are playing at.

First Year: $1100 per month
Class A: $$1250 per month
Class AA: $1350-$1450 per month
Class AAA: $1500-$2000 per month

the above info about first year player drafts was posted here.

info about signing bonuses....its from 2006 but it should help to give you an idea.

Dennis Dixon was 5th round pick by Atlanta and got a $150,000 signing bonus. His contract was for six years. Had he fulfilled the whole contract, assuming he didn't make it to the show in those six years, he would have averaged $40-50,000 per year with the bonus factored in. Pretty good money for playing a game, but hardly life changing money.

ok...so he could make peanuts compared to if he goes to school untill he is a junior then enters the draft again and maybe improves his draft stock a lot and gets drafted 1st round and then your talking millions in bonus and salary will be higher considering what pdx wrote (factoring in the signing bonus through a 6 year contract). sounds a lot better to me.

That's assuming he improves his draft stock. Since he'll have to be putting in a lot of time on the football team, and he'll be playing on a team that will likely still be sub-par in a few years, that's a big if.

that if is worth it if you ask me. if he doesnt improve his draft stock then oh well....he is probably pretty close to getting his degree and im sure he would make some good friends and have the experience of a life time in college.
