fun with early-season RPI:

florida atlantic is #13 in the latest RPI, largely because they are 6-1 against the #35 SOS. good record + good SOS = good RPI.

but six of their seven games played have been against 2-5 george washington and 2-4 delaware (they also had a mid-week game against florida, who is obviously good). so why the high SOS? george washington has an rpi of 61, delaware 60.

oregon is 117 in the latest rpi, if you're wondering.

anyway, i have no idea what to make of FAU. strong numbers, even if those numbers look... skewed. they were picked to finish 3rd in C-USA. if past games against the arizona schools in PK Park are any indication, a bunch of warm weather kids like FAU are about to get shell-shocked if the weekend weather forecast proves accurate. it's going to be cold and wet.

friday: W, 2-1. mercer was outstanding, giving up 1 run over 7 innings. He outdueled their ace, jake miednik, who came into the game 2-0 w/ a 0.68 era. goldfarb drove in steer w/ an rbi single in the 4th, then ryne nelson scored an insurance run in the 7th for a 2-0 lead. owls picked up a run in the 7th, but the bullpen shut them down.

saturday: L, 5-0. stringer tossed three shutout innings then got bombed in the 4th. not the first time he's done this; he'll be pitching well and then out of the blue he'll completely lose it, and when the wheels come off there's no getting it back. not scoring any runs was unfortunate, but FAU's kyle marman was also 2-0, with a 0.71 era. they've got better pitching than we do, frankly.

sunday: W, 4-0. acuna gave the best outing of his career, throwing 6 shutout innings. he didn't exactly mow the owls down, but he didn't walk anybody and he was able to successfully get out of trouble a few times. throwing good pitches in tight situations has NOT been a strength, so it was good to see him react well to pressure. the offense picked up 2 in the 6th and 2 in the 7th for their runs.

absolutely!

i take a weekly glance at the RPI rankings. we were #117 last week, i check this morning and we shot up to #14.

(i know rpi is rather meaningless this year in the season, but FAU could be an unexpectedly decent series win for us if we can pull off the W tonight. FAU is up to #4)

ducks might have something with kafka. he started the game giving up a double and then a triple (owls scored 2 runs) then retired the next 9 batters. he was basically on cruise control until there was 1 out in the 6th. nearly a quality start, but he missed it by 2/3 of an inning. lots of movement on his fastball. kid is just a freshman, but he looks like a keeper.

speaking of freshmen, both frosh outfielders had great games at the plate yesterday, and defensively deluca went over the center field wall to rob fau's best hitter of a home run. phenomenal timing on that catch.

four games with UC-Davis starting on thursday.
