1992 Shooting Guards

Post by Zyme »

Top 5 1992 Shooting Guards:

Doug Christie C+ B- C B+ C- A

The Pepperdine star dominated the West Coast Conference this year and walked away with CPOY, and by a big margin. Nobody even sniffed them in the conference tourney or regular season but they ran into a much more complete team in Memphis State in the NCAA tourney. He was never good enough to handle the offense but was forced to by shear fact he was the best guard (not to mention the best player) on the team. He was very consistent shooter from the outside and lad his team in steals. Lock down defender, his footwork is by far the best of anyone, small or big, in the class. He can struggle when put into transition across screens but usually had the recovery save only against the quickest of opposing guards. Very good prospect, not the highest potential, but should develop plenty.

Jon Barry C+ B+ C C+ C A

Barry was part of the Georgia Tech setup that one the national championship a few years back and was the focal point en route to a Sweet Sixteen finish. He was skille at shooting both inside and outside throughout the tournement and played way above his size. Due to their switching style, he often ended up guarding 3 and 4s but still performe very well in those situations. He boxes out with the best of them and made life very east on his 3s and 4s to get easy rebounds with the opposing bigs shunted out of the paint. Scouts love his work ethic and his workman ethos he showed during interviews should serve him well.

Predrag "Sasha" Danilović C+ B+ C C- D+ B

A continuation of the tradition Yugoslavia has shown in recent years. In a major surprise, Danilovic was called up for the Yugoslavian team during th qualifying-phase of the olympics and did not dissapoint. He came in off the bench against France to go a cool 8/12 with 5 of those from behind the arc, finishing with 21 points and three rebounds. Since then his role has expanded to be the 6th man, and even sometimes spelling Drazen when his legs looked like they needed a game off. Deadly from the outside, his elite size and excellent leverage made him very to guard. He does struggle with turnovers at time and really takes his time getting back on defense. He seems to think trying to poke away the ball while his defender runs past him is an awesome style of defense.

Harold Miner B+ C- D+ C C- A

This kid knows he is special, and Baby Jordan lets everyone know it. Nobody in the nation played more above the rim than Harold Miner last year. He knows he is the best and tells anyone who will listen. He talks a big game then does well backing it up as he seems to have springs built into him. Blew away the combine record for guard vertical. Oozing with potential, he would make the Mario and Luigi say: "damn son!".

David Wesley C+ C+ C+ C C- B

Very strong combo guard out of Baylor. He had a very solid year, despite not being able to secure a NCAA berth, ending with 16pts and five assists per game. Scouts love his work ethic, and despite being only six feet even, he was able to finish against much taller guards with ease. Rarely turned the ball over, he play a lot like a point forward for most of Baylor's games. Never seemed to put the effort coach wanted on defense, and spent most of his time slapping at the ball and not getting into good position to stop the drive. While he may not have the highest potential in the class, scouts love his combination of athleticism and skill.

Other Shooting Guards Prospects:

Bryant Stith C C+ C+ C+ C- A

Starter for the Cavaliers on their run in the ACC tournement. They lost out to the Dukies in the final and received an offer for the NIT in reward. They took this opportunity and ran with is as they scraped and clawed their way to the NIT crown. He ran Virgina's offense with east, but scouts don't think he passes the ball enough and are convinced his best position is as SG in the pros and is unable to play point at the next level. Very skilled outside defender and great potential, he has a decent shot at making a swingman rotation at the next level.

Darrick Martin C+ B- C- C+ C- B

Very talented outsie marksman from UCLA. The bruins put out a ton of good prospects this year and this is reflected by their deep run. Though the Fab-Five put an end to the hopes of a title, Martin did well during the tourney and the regular season. Voted all-conference 2nd team, he was a very good finisher at the rim and was a very good defender. He never seemed to be able to string together said skills for any length of time, the at the combine he put both of them on display so scouts are hopeful he can impress at the next level.

Dell Demps C C+ C+ C- D B

Small-school prospect out of Pacific University. He has pro-typical size at 6'3", around 200 with great athleticism. He was a very good passing from a 2 guard and played decent defense this year. Very polished outside threat. Scouts are torn, some think he is ready to explode and others are more muted, the B grade reflects this schism.

Jo Jo English C B- C D+ F+ A

Jo Jo is one of the most unique players to come along in some time. He is very technically gifted swingman. While he is 6'4" 195, he never seems to have learned how to use at as he always seems to be the last one back on defense and down the court on offense. The only time he finished a break was when he was still getting up from a failed dunk on the offensive end. Despit his lack of athleticism, his bag of tricks with the ball seems unending. Scouts think his lack of physicals will slow his progress (especially rebounding the ball), but anyone this technically gifted will ind a home.

Todd Day C B- C- B- C B

Very good defender and outside threat Todd Day was the second-Fiddle on the Razorback's tourney run. He did a little of everything and showed great quality of the defensive end. While he very good from deep, his flat shot led to many hard deflections. His motor turned these caroms into points as he love to outwork and out muscle smaller players for offensive rebounds.
Decent inside and defense, limited upside
