Lorenzo Romar = Rick Barnes

Great recruiters, mediocre coaches
“If everybody in this room just want to be real with themselves, this game could have went either way,” he said. “We turned the ball over a lot. We beat ourself. Just be real with yourself right now. We beat ourself.”

This is hilarious, but it actually kind of sucks. The Pac-12 was buried before conference play last season due to losses like these, and not winning hardly any RPI top 50 games. It would be nice if Oregon could snag a few RPI top 50 wins in non-conference play so we don't have to lean on conference perception (not saying it wasn't bad last season) as much.

Florida State lost to a nobody as well. Washington is the only Pac-12 school to lose a game so far, I think we will be OK. But you are right, Oregon probably does need to beat games like the Nevada / Vandy ones if we want to even think about NCAA tournament.

Barnes has at least gone to a final 4, Romar's UW is the basketball equivalent of South Carolina football. Always ranked high at the beginning of the year, then never to be found at the end.

Colorado beat #16 Baylor today so at least someone's trying to carry the conference banner.

And now the Huskies have gotten bombed at home vs. Colorado St. And yet their RPI is somehow #18. The Ducks are at #19.

What is wrong with this conference? Way too many recruiters, not enough coaches.

That's what I'm thinking. For example, Howland used to be such a good coach but it seems like he's just recruiting good players and expecting them to be good. With how much talent he has, he has no business losing to Cal Poly.

and, to be fair, colorado state is very good. true, a team you'd like to man up and beat home, but this might have been one of those games washington lost and actually moved up a bit in the rpi. i don't know.

Honestly though, how good is Washington this year? Within the last few years, UCLA always seems to struggle in a couple non-conference games against inferior teams. I consider that their yearly fluke, and they'll be back. But Washington, they might be as bad as advertized. Wilcox is their main scorer, Gaddy has been a busy through his first 3 years, after that they don't really have much help. N'Diaye is a solid big man, but he's so clumsy and his 46% FT shooting almost negates all the good he does.

Just saying, I think Washington finishes in the bottom half of the Pac. Colorado, Arizona, Cal, UCLA, ASU, and Oregon imo are gonna be the top half teams. Stanford just on the outside.
