0-7 with runners in scoring position, this is horrible. Why did Payne try to steal 3rd at the bottom of the 8th? I don't understand that decision.

if he can get on third, a pop fly, wild pitch, passed ball, and even a well placed infield grounder could score him.OregonFan4Life wrote:0-7 with runners in scoring position, this is horrible. Why did Payne try to steal 3rd at the bottom of the 8th? I don't understand that decision.

Tolman has had a rough series so far. I don't think he's gotten a hit yet and has had 4 errors on defense.

Actually Tolman had the hit in the 8th off Berg right after Payne got caught trying to steal. Agreed with the post above, don't understand the steal attempt there, seemed high risk with low reward. We would of had 1st and 2nd, 1 out and with Payne's speed, in good position to score from 2nd on a hit.
Hard to win with only 3 hits. UCLA's pitchers are doing a great job.

Exactly my thoughts. I imagine Payne had the speed to get home on Tolman's single to left field anyways. Just didn't seem worth it at that moment in time, when Oregon needed anything they could get desperately. I can understand trying to catch UCLA off guard, but not with someone who just stole 2nd. Just didn't seem worth it at that time.uosportsguy01 wrote:Actually Tolman had the hit in the 8th off Berg right after Payne got caught trying to steal. On a side note, I missed the 1st inning, did UCLA score off of an error?

Re: UCLA @ Oregon (3 game series Fri-Sun)
the strategy is that by that point in the game/series, it became abundantly clear that oregon just wasn't coming up with the big hit, and horton wanted to put the game in motion. i realize tolman would later single, but it's a misnomer to assume he would have seen the same pitch if there was a runner in scoring position. no one knows.
i have no problem with the call. we had runners in scoring position a million times the last two nights with nothing to show for it. if payne steals the base successfully -- which he's done dozen of times in his career -- and he ties the game on something as simple as a passed ball, or a pop fly, horton is a "genius". i thought payne could have gotten a better jump, ucla had a hell of a throw, their execution won out.

Ducks get another run on FC RBI by Healy. Altobelli scored. 3-2 Bruins lead.

Heineman gets a bases-clearing, 2-out triple. 5-3 Oregon in bottom of 5th.
