Ex-Houston Guard COMMITS to Oregon

Post by UOducksTK1 »

On campus according to mops.

article why he left Houston: http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports. ... e-program/

profiles: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketb ... seph-young

He is a big time scorer, especially from outside. Would be exactly what the doctor ordered.

Young is a great shooter, would be an enormous pick up

The connection here is that Damyean Dotson also went to Yates

@JonRothstein
Arizona, Baylor, Florida, + Oregon are all in the mix for Houston transfer Joseph Young, per multiple sources. 2 years of eligibility left.

From ESPN:
Houston transfer Joseph Young is coming off a year where he averaged 18 PPG, shot 42 percent from 3-point range and a blistering 87.5 percent from the foul line. It's safe to say Young would be a welcome addition for just about any team in the land. A report today has four schools in the lead for the 6-foot-3 shooting guard.

That group includes Arizona, Baylor, Florida and Oregon, according to this tweet by Jon Rothstein of CBSSports.com.

Young will have to sit out next season per NCAA transfer rules, and will have two years of eligibility remaining starting in 2014-15. At Arizona, he could serve as a replacement for Nick Johnson, who'll be a senior in 2014-15 if he returns to school. At Oregon, Young would take over for Damyean Dotson, who looks like a possible first-round pick in the 2014 NBA draft. At Baylor, there will be a need to replace seniors Brady Heslip and Gary Franklin, though athletic ESPN 100 combo guard Allerik Freeman is coming on board next season. And at Florida, the Gators are looking for 3-point shooters to team with Michael Frazier II going forward.

Among the best transfers available
"Young was supposed to go to Providence initially out of high school and ended up with his dad, who was on staff at Houston. His dad is no longer working for James Dickey, so his son decided to bolt after putting up 18 points per game last season and shooting 42 percent from deep. He can score off the catch and off the dribble. He is not a great athlete, especially in terms of his lateral quickness, and that affects his ability to defend."
“If everybody in this room just want to be real with themselves, this game could have went either way,” he said. “We turned the ball over a lot. We beat ourself. Just be real with yourself right now. We beat ourself.”

If the kid puts up numbers like those, or better, after sitting out a season, how fast will he jump to the NBA?

Would be nice if the FT shooting touch rubbed off on the whole team...

Odd that they mention Dotson as a possible first round draft pick. Didn't think national sportswriters/analysts thought that much about. As for Young, sounds like it would be a good pick-up if he decided on Oregon. Not sure he'd step in right away if Dotson left, since we still have no idea about how good Abdul-Bassit is or how he fits into the program.

Yeah Oregon would probably make more sense, but it is Arizona. Hopefully he's quacking soon!

He's trying to appeal so he's eligible right away as a RS JR. If he doesn't win appeal, he'll only have one year. Some quotes from Mops/Matt Prehm on this transfer.
MattPrehm said...

This verbal commit I am told is being viewed as maybe the biggest get for Dana Altman in his four years so far at Oregon. Word is he destroyed every player he faced in workouts with the team while he made his official visit earlier this week. I am told he will have the same kind of impact that Kazemi had at Oregon in that he takes Oregon from a good team to one that could and should become elite.

Young is a terrific outside shooter that can fill it up and addresses perhaps the team's biggest issue from last season - three-point shooting. He shot 42 percent from three last year and averaged 18 points per game. Young will battle Dotson and Moser as the team's best player in 2013-14 and is the team's career leader in points now.

Look for him to appeal his year of sitting out to play right away and the chances of that happening are very optimistic I am told.

The entire dynamic of the Oregon basketball team has now changed. Oregon now feels like they've got two lethal snipers from three in Young and Abdul-Bassit while also giving Dana a third guard who can handle the point guard duties behind Artis and Loyd.

This move also pretty much assures Kyle Wiltjer will not be an Oregon Duck as I was expecting. The room for Young isn't going to be there with a spot being assured for Felicio who Oregon still feels confident will get into school.
Correct. If Young is cleared to play right away he will be a RS JR. If not he will be a senior in 2014-15 after sitting out like Devoe Joseph did. He could still practice with the team, but won't be able to travel with the team.

We could always use his scoring and high shooting precentages. Love this addition!

It'd be nice if he's eligible right away, but even if he's not, he'd likely be just like any of the number of one-year transfer Altman has thrived with in his time here.

Great pickup, it would huge he he won his appeal. It seems like Altman win every single recruiting battle for these transfers.
