EUGENE, Ore. -- Counting wins in the men’s 800 and 1,500 and the women’s 400 and javelin, Oregon advanced 12 competitors to the NCAA Track and Field Championships by virtue of their top-five finishes Saturday at the NCAA West Regional at Historic Hayward Field. In all the Ducks will have at least 23 representatives for the June 10-13 national meet in Fayetteville, Ark., 12 men and 11 women.

Congratulations! I can't wait to see an Oregon sweep! :D

Thanks for the update! Hey so can someone with a little knowledge of how this sport works explain what this means. Did our team win/not win? Does this matter? I know the coaches said they accomplished what they wanted to, but what does that really mean? Basically do we still have a chance to win the championship? Thanks.

Winning regional's is not the goal not all events are competed for their. Since NCAA did away with automatic qualifying times, the emphasis is to finish in the top 5 for the automatic invite to the national competion; there are a number of at large invites also available but I am not certain as to criteria to meet those, nor which events .

I believe their are 2 standard events: the 10k and one other event which slips my mind at the moment which are qualified by season performance and not at the regionals (I want to say hammer; decathalon and heptathalon I know also fall into this catagory). Hence the "score" at regional is slightly misleading

The regional goal is to get people qualified, their may be 12 men who qualified, however they may qualify (like Rupp 10k, 5k and 1500) in more than one event.

here is the current men's form chart: (Ducks by 10)
This form presumes Rupp does not run the 1500, onky 5k and 10k

A men and womens championship sweep would be sweet.

I read somewhere (Oregonian, I think) that one of the athletes was not able to double up because the events were too close together. I think it was Wheaton in the 800 and 1500.

I am curious, the women's 4 X 400 was DQed during regionals, but it was not considered a wreck for the team. Is that because they were not really expected to do anything at nationals anyway?
