91 Centers

Post by Zyme »

Top 5 1991 Centers:
Dikembe Motombo C+ D+ D A+ B- C

Large and in charge. The hulking center from the Republic of Zaire walked away with the Lefty Driesell Award for DPOY. Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo averaged over four blocks a game for Georgetown. After a hard fought 1st round the Hoyas lost a war with eventual national Champion UNLV in the 2nd round. UNLV tried inside early with Larry Johnson, and fell behind hard, Deke had 3 blocks when halftime arrived with a eight point lead. In the second half Stacey Augman and Greg Anthony went to work, and bombed the Rebels to a two point win. In the post, Deke really only has his height and immense strength for his offensive game, and he leaves a lot of points at the free-throw line. While he is listed at 25, scouts are worried his birth certificate has vanished in the recent troubles in Zaire and many are concerned he is older than his listing.

Stanley Roberts C+ D D- C+ C+ A

Skilled big man that took his talents to the Spain. After Shaq failed his grades, he left to play pro. On the advice of his agent he signed with Real madrid after a biding war between they and Barcelona. Despite being a rookie, he acquitted himself well, winning the Liga ACB title, but losing badly to Tel Aviv in the first round of the Euroleage playoff. He returned home and declared for the NBA draft. Scouts liked what they saw at the combine and during his year abroad, showing a high motor and an excellent work ethic. His post moves were solid, for a rookie, and he played very good defense against some of the best eurocenters, but was not effective when the roles were reversed.

Bison Dele B- C- D B- C+ B

Very strong inside finisher born Brian Carson Williams. Played center for Arizona during their sweet sixteen run, but scouts think he my find his position more at Power Forward in the Association. Very strong with a well developed set of post moves that he draws from and fights offensive misses consistently. On defense, scouts see him gamble way too much on trying to poke away the ball rather than keeping his hands up in the low post. Few high posters were able to turn on him and defended the perimeter very well (really frustrated Tabak).Scouts are worried that he doesn't have the best motor and off the court he seems to live outside the BB lifestyle, and they worry he may take his money and set sail.

Žan Tabak C+ C F+ C+ C+ B

Fled Croatia when a call for draftees went out with the growing tensions between the breakaway republic and Yugoslavia. Local pundits have howled at him for being unpatriotic, even so far to call him a traitor when he listed his home country as Yugoslavia and not the Republic of Croatia. These distractions off the court seemed to have affected his combine where he looked slugish and uninterested. While he look like a very good eurocenter at KK Split, excelling in the high post, he is kinda a black hole. Many speculated this is why Kukoc left for KK Partisan last year.

LeRon Ellis C+ D+ D+ C+ B- A

Ellis story is one of moving around, never settling anywhere. He first attended Parkrose HS in Portland, Oregon before moving to California. He attended Kentucky for two years before transferring to Syracuse for the rest of his career. Very good a rebounding the basketball, he provided a solidifying presence in the post for a Syracuse squad that was sorely lacking before he arrived. Never living in the same place for more than five years, this wanderlust concerns scouts.

Other Center Prospects:

Donald Hodge B- C- D C+ C+ B

Does a little of everything well and has a solid set of post moves to compliment his well rounded game. Scouts like his game and think it translates very well to the NBA.

Victor Alexander C+ C F+ C B- B

Very good on the offensive boards, Alexander has an unlimited motor therein. He struggles to put the ball back up once he gets the ball back, and even made a name for himself air-mailing the outlet pass after the defensive board.

Isaac Austin C+ D+ D- B- C+ B

Locked down the post for ASU's run to the round of 32 but struggled against #1 seed Arkansas. Scouts don't think he has the greatest potential in the world but could develop into a 6th man or very good roleplayer.

Brett Szabo C+ C-F+ C+ C+ A

Small school kid that struggled to get his shot up against even the weaker competition. Dominated his competition defensively.

Bob Stewart C D+ C C+ C+ B

Very good ball handler for a center, very balanced defender. Scouts like his strength.

Great write-ups as usual.
For a guy that played in multiple all-star games and lead the league in rebounding a dozen times then was hoping Mutombo would look better on the potential and rebounding.

And not everything will go exactly as it did in real life. That way GM's have to put in a little work and read between the lines sometimes.

And what you remember and what actually happened may be another thing entirely. FYI, I try to keep it close, but there will be surprises where I feel it necessary.
