98 Point Guards

Post by Zyme »

Top 5 1998 Point Guards

Jason Terry C B- C+ C+ C- B

One of the more complete guards in this class. He as an extremely mature outside shooting form and he did a fair amount of damage from the free-throw line-extended. He also has a very good corner-three but often seems to not be able to hit from outside when not standing at the baseline. This may be only an issue of mentality but he has yet to be able to shirk this quirk. He has very good hands on defense. Good, not great, potential, which scouts think he is the most day 1 NBA-ready guard of this year's crop.

Mike Bibby C+ C+ C+ C C- A

Aggressive shooter from the point guard position. He is not a great passer but has not been known to struggle with turnover. What scouts are excited about is his ability around the basket coupled with his deep range touch. Great potential, but not when compared to players like Kobe or LaFrenz, but scouts agree that there is a great deal of room for Bibby to grow. While he isn't the best defender, he has the skills to be a solid combo guard.

Rafer Alston C C+ C+ B- C A

Alston was a last minute invite to the combine but was one of the stand out attendees. He was by far the most polished of this year's point guard crop. He has a good enough outside shoot but his positioning and recovery off screens is top shelf. Good, but not great at handling the ball, he is a pretty good at picking out the tight passing windows. Quite a good rebounder for a point guard. Scouts think he may not have the best potential in this class but should have plenty to makes a solid contributor to any team.

Earl Boykins C- B- B C+ D- A

One thing you would never accuse of Boykins of is being a scorer, but that should not take away from just how good this little man is. He may only be 5'5", but he defines spark-plug and is never afraid to take a shot over a bigger man. Excellent passer and very good at keeping his hands on the ball. He has very good defensive fundamentals, but he lacks any sort of leverage and stronger guards love to abuse this part of the matchup. This also leads to a fair amount of underestimation as more than a few were victims to his lightning quick hands.

Jason Williams C+ C C+ B- C- A

Williams is a versitle defensive comboguard of the old style. He is an inside drive and kick guard who excels in the pick and roll offense. He is a excellent defender, not as good a Alson but not far behind. Scouts love his approach to the game an believe he has all the tools and work ethic to become one of the better defensive point guards.
