Nick Saban Retiring Edit: Lanning - "I'm not leaving."

Interesting bit about how Pat and all the others at the NC game were talking to Coach Lanning about how he was the heir apparent as soon as Saban retires, and Dan told them even then he had no intention to take the job. I actually wonder if Alabama made an assumption that he would come, because they seem to be scrambling now, Saban and his agent have been spotted in the complex, and the time limit they leaked is in danger of having to be extended. Our coach said no to Ala-freaking-bama. I'm still letting that sink in.

I think Norvell, with an outside chance of Bill O'Brien. Two years ago I would have said Dabo Swinney hands down, but his stock has dropped recently.

I don't have any info but I see DeBoer as someone who has an NFL mindset. He obviously isn't big on recruiting (like Chip). That's just my thoughts.

That would be devastating for FSU, though. I've never liked them, but I'd actually feel bad if Norvell left.

In less than 2 months they'd have lost their star QB to a season ending injury, get seemingly robbed from being in the CFP playoffs, having over 30 players out for their Bowl game and getting stomped by 60 points by Georgia, to losing their excellent head coach to Alabama.

Here's a thought, if Norvell "does" leave FSU, would they rehire Jimbo Fisher?

Zero chance FSU would bring back Jimbo. That relationship did not end amicably, and he left them in a pretty bad spot roster wise. Their fans would absolutely revolt. I think there's a better chance they would go after Deion, though I think there may have been issues between Deion and his alma mater in the past, as well. Plus, I'm not sure if that would leave his son in the cold, as it would be his 2nd transfer, so that could also be a deterrent from him leaving. It'll be interesting to see, now that I can feel confident that we don't have to worry about any of these openings affecting us.

My money is still on Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin is an excellent coach, but he never beat Saban and would likely be considered a step down by their fan base.

As I mentioned before, I think Dabo Swinney would have been a lock for the job, but Clemson has taken a step back the past couple years.

Kirby Smart has beaten Saban, but is almost certainly staying at Georgia.

Urban Meyer has beaten Saban and is currently available. Hmmm...

I'd have to say the two most likely college names are Kiffin and DeBoer, and also DeBoer seems to be a special coach, I wouldn't be surprised to see them give Kiffin a shot. Kiffin took his lumps long ago but has since become successful and respectable -- and he can recruit. I'd question whether DeBoer could keep up the level of recruiting necessary to keep Alabama a perenial contender.

Apparently this Alabama writer just can't fathom a college football head coach turning down the job at Alabama simply because he likes his present school so much. Pretty arrogant in my opinion.
