It's amazing how he always seems to break records at the most opportune times.

From the GoDucks blog:

Ashton Eaton ran 2:32.67 in the 1,000 meters to break the world and American record in the heptathlon with a score of 6,499 points. Eaton needed to run 2:34.58, or about :31 a lap to break Dan O'Brien's 1993 record of 6,476 points and he did so, setting a personal best in the event by six seconds. Much more on Eaton's historic day to come later on goducks.com.

Amazing how many guys with Oregon connections of some kind end up being great decathlon or heptathlon competitors. O'Brien was born in Portland, and his adoptive family lived in Klamath Falls.

Dave Johnson, a former Olympic decathlete, grew up in Montana and Oregon... He is currently the AD at Corban College, in Salem.

Tom Pappas, who attended LCC, was born in Azalea, Oregon.

Craig Brigham, a South Eugene HS and U of O athlete, is another top name.

Not a bad group.

Congratulations, Ashton!

Well done!

Our track and field is amazing. I know someone just posted that Eaton is the best athlete ever at Oregon, and it's hard to argue.

Heckuv a job dominating the NCAA Indoors and winning by 25 points.
Tip of the hat to the men for finishing tied for second. Great effort by all.

Too bad they didn't have some more sprinters and jumpers to help out the men. The women have come a long way from a couple years ago when they were barely competitive.

On the men side they could use legit threats in the distance events. Did fine in the mile but no points in the 3000 and 5000. This team needs help in the field events. Back in the 70's the Ducks very consistent in the weights events...shot etc...

Puskedra is a better 10k runner than a 3 or 5k, and Centrowitz/the Mercado's/McNamera/Acosta/Klotz are all threats to register points in the middle and long distances. It WAS very strange watching UO struggle in the indoor distance events, but the outdoor season should be better. Hostetler and Wolff should both score in the javelin, too.
