Kinda sucks that we'll never get to see him play, but like duckscribe it can't hurt.

You never know guys, if he really wants to go to college the scouts of all the major league teams will know, and this will make his draft stock go way, way down. Most of the teams will not even take a chance on someone if they know the player might go to college. Just have to hope now that coach horton can woo him enough to get him on campus.

I get what your trying to say but I think that has about a 2% chance of happening. Look and see what a top 10 pick made in the MLB draft made last year. Usually high school guys that go in the first 3 rounds head straight to the minors.

I totally agree I would love it if he came here. But hes a 6'4 Lefty that throws 94-95 MPH and those kind of guys are valued very highly by MLB GM's.

Matzek is projected to go #9 Overall in the draft. Unless something drastic happens or he fails to agree on a dollar figure with an mlb team, Matzek unfortunately will never make it to Oregon.

Interesting that Matzek played against Braxton Lane, the Oregon football/baseball recruit in the high school all american game last season.

The only way this kid sees the field at Oregon is if the team picking him can't sign him, which probably won't happen because now a lot of high picks have verbally agreed to a deal before the draft with the team or teams that are projected to pick them. If a team doesn't think they can come to terms with a player they'll pass on him and pick someone else. Even if he slips in the draft he'll get picked by someone like the Yankees or Red Sox who'll throw top 10-pick money at him even if he goes at the end of the first round.

It's real surprising that Oregon can even get these types of players to look at Oregon, let alone commit. You would think that Oregon would have to build up its recruiting considering that the program hadn't been around for 28 years, but we pulled in the #1 or 2 class in the nation and only lost a couple to the draft. Next year's class probably won't be as big, but Horton could make this program viable in a couple of years if he continues recruiting like he already has. Hopefully, he can get Braxton Lane to show up for baseball next year.

Major league teams do not like drafting high school pitchers, because they are a major risk. There are teams that will do it but very few. Being a big lefty will definitely help his stock. And yes i understand how much a player in the top 10 gets for their signing bonus, its an insane amount of money. I was just trying to add a positive spin to this.

I'm not worried whether he comes here or not. Just the fact that we got a commit from the #1 player in the first year of our baseball program is huge. Imagine our football team getting a Bryce Brown or Terrelle Pryor in their first year back after a 28 year hiatus. There will be much more to come & not all of them will be going in the draft/
