In-state star Alex Balducci earlier today became the Ducks fourth official commitment and more importantly Oregon’s first commitment along the defensive line. Much has been made of Oregon’s struggles to recruit defensive line prospects and once again defensive line will be a focal point in this recruiting class for head coach Chip Kelly and company. The commitment of the 6’4” 260 pound Balducci, who plays at Central Catholic High School in Portland, is a strong start to what will hopefully be a deep defensive line recruiting class.

Defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro has to be ecstatic about this commitment as Balducci is a versatile prospect that looks to have the ability to swing from the outside at defensive end to the inside at defensive tackle. Currently Balducci is rated as a three star prospect by Scout and ESPN while Rivals gives him a four star grade.

Given Oregon’s current depth along the defensive line Balducci should get a great opportunity to contribute as a true freshman in 2012 but a redshirt year isn’t out of the question. Now that Oregon has gained their first defensive line commitment the focus will shift to other defensive line prospects like Jeremy Castro and DeForest Buckner among others as the Ducks look to bring in a defensive line class of five or so prospects.
