Blazers 2022-2023 Thread

Post by Duck07 »

Not to start the Blazers thread off on a dour note, but it sure feels like this is the season to trade Dame, especially with the way that Russell Wilson has fallen off a cliff in his play. I know they're different sports, but their situations have felt the same for a long time because of PGA/Vulcan/PNW locality and their individual play on the field/court.

Sadly it also feels like due to the Robert Sarver/Forced Sale that the Blazers and Seahawks will once again delay selling either of the teams which means Vulcan won't be doing anything in the interim to see the team become a Taxpayer either and instead get below the threshold. We know Phalanx has been about the Post-Dame PDX era but I'm curious if this is now the general sentiment or if people are still clinging to hope that a Dame-Ant-Hart-Grant-Nurk lineup can compete?

I have 0% hope this current roster competes. I think there are 2 options

Give up a million picks for someone like KD and take a shot now but hurt yourself down the road. Or, trade Dame, take lumps for a few years and hope you hit lotto luck

Instead, I think our brass will ride out this roster another 2-3 years of being an 8 seed and just mediocre in every facet.

Trade dame to an eastern conference contender. Go full tank mode and hope to get Victor Wembanyama with the number one pick

Which will guarantee him being a bust and Scoot being the next Jordan.

It would be more like an oden/kd scenario, as Vic seems unlikely to drop to the #2 pick.

This team will be more competitive than people think. Everyone forgets that Portland finished last season with only one starter (hart) playing regular minutes, and even he sat out quite often. This year's team is currently the healthiest it's been in the last 3 seasons. The emphasis on defensive minded players with a defensive head coach will lead to a lot of close games, but there's enough offense on this team to come out on top of a majority of those games. I'm going on a limb and saying Portland lands somewhere from the 4 to 6 seed in the conference by the end.

Nice road win against the Lakers. Down 7 with just under 2 minutes left and they stole the game. Grant has been a really nice addition.

He's the type of PF they haven't had in quite some time. He can get his own shot when needed but works just fine off it. Plus, he's a decent rebounder and defender. Now if only they could get Nurk to live up to his contract, especially on the defensive end.

The increased effort and ability on defense is really apparent. The 'try JUST hard enough to win' very clearly remains. Going to be interesting and also gonna make us want to pull out hair out.

The Blazers are in the familiar situation of being right at the luxury tax threshold and having several players (Hart, Winslow, Grant, and Little) on expiring deals that they won't be able to re-sign more than two of because Lillard is already eating everyone's lunch. So enjoy this team now a the outset of the new season, because this is probably the peak. Somebody said they didn't like the way Nurk was playing. Just wait until he gets injured, and they are back to starting Eubanks, Watford, etc.

The dream scenario for this season is that everyone stays relatively healthy, Gary Payton II comes back strong from surgery, and Shaedon Sharpe develops quickly enough to help the team make noise in the playoffs before another offseason re-build is necessary. Another is that they find some amazing trade that improves a dim outlook for future seasons, or some scrub at the end of the bench becomes an amazing contributor unexpectedly. Cronin made some nice moves last year, but then gave all the money he freed up to overpay Lillard, Simons and Nurk.

Best record in the NBA. Going to say it now while it's true.

Strange to see Portland at 4-0 after all the doubts as to whether this roster would actually work. Things should really get interesting once they get GP2 back and providing some additional defensive help.

If nothing else, the attacking BillupsBall style is fun to watch. They had a stretch last season, before Simons and Nurk got injured, in which they won several games with this same sort of style. At the time, people were lamenting that it was just hurting the Blazers' draft position, but it gave a glimpse of how Billups envisioned this team playing. Now that they are healthy and have better talent implementing the same style, they are at least able to be competitive.
