The Poty Award

Post by nehalem »

The Poty Award is for the post of the year as nominated and seconded for best original post from all categories. The originality requirement should keep the nominations to under ten for the year, if you know what I mean.

Ricky Gervais could host the final vote in December, or whenever.

First nomination is by maxduck of Duck07's post "Perspective on this years recruiting class." Seconded by me. Duck07 use of graphics could also garner a further nomination in the "Best Graphics or Special Effects in a Post" category.

If the mods like this idea, I would reverently ask to make this topic sticky.

Perspective on this recruiting class.
Duck07 wrote:Since some of our fowl friends are experiencing what I like to call R.A.D. or Recruiting Affective Disorder which is a mood disorder whereby one's emotional state and well-being are influenced by the numerous items pertaining to College Football Recruiting and the National Signing Day. These are but not limited to: 17 year old boys playing games with their recruiters, perception of one team's class versus yours, and usually include the imaginative machinations of what said recruit could do followed by disclaimers.

Followed by reading the in-flight magazine located under your seat titled "The Duck07 2012 Class Perspective"

In this manual you will find these interesting thoughts and concepts beginning with an introduction by Don Duckleone reminding you to do what's best for you:

"First off, why are you questioning the Overlord Chip Kelly? Don't you know you that Sith Lord P.K. has a machine that tracks all of this and he sends it Santa? Yea, you just messed up your kids Christmas next year. Now, my friend Duck07 has something he'd like to say."

Alright, first thing to understand with this class is that we have a LOT of underclassmen already on the team and yes that makes a difference with landing recruits. Next, we have gotten a lot players in this class that can either contribute right away or sooner rather than later in their careers. Let's just look at this from a position by position basis.

QB: Rodrigues and Lockie. I don't believe there is a QB that we could have gotten in this class that would legitimately challenge BB or MM (and certainly not DT had he stayed like was assumed for so long) this spring or fall. Both of these guys look like ideal fits for what Chip wants. I'm not going to view a single QB recruit of his be it a 2* or 5* until 1 of his QB's actually under-performs on the field for us. Also, the book isn't even close to being written about the QB race and while its unlikely one of them wins it, one of them may very well make it as the #3.

RB: We all figured that LMJ was going to leave at the beginning of the season and while we held out hope, in the end he did what we long figured would happen. Depth is not an issue unless an inury occurs and guess what, when is that never the case? Byron Marshall is another guy who fits what we do. Perhaps another guy would be nice and this is another crucial thing to remember: there might be one we don't know about. This thing happens all the time in recruiting but even if its just BM, I like his prospects be them in the short or long-term for us.

WR: We had hoped we'd see a bit more from the WR unit and it didn't happen. We have some of the same questions going in but we cannot discount any of the RS's until, again they actually underperform. Yes, Huff and Vaughn both need to step it up, but in looking at who we picked up, Dwayne Stanford is the kind of bigger bodied WR we've missed with Drew Davis gone. If he sees the field next year, which is certainly possible, he'll have been a tremendous pick-up for us.

TE: If you've got a problem with Brown and Bayliss well there's not much I can do for you, really. Both are big, athletic and fast. In time, they'll be pretty strong too and really, the young talent at WR/TE says we could just as easily transition to being a Top 10 passing offense nationally from our where we are as a running team.

OL: I think this is one of the ZOMG! positions based in large part because of the talent to be had. I don't disagree with that at all, it certainly is a very talented OL class. It's also not over. CP (if he commits) and Long would make this a nice class based on adding a few more talented bodies, but we return 7 of our top 10 OL and have some nice depth from last years class so even if we don't have a giant haul (which was unlikely to begin with), our depth says we're not missing much.

Now, before we get into defense, there are the NA fans and detractors. It's obvious which boat I'm in but what's important to remember in this is that a personal bias about what the defense (or offense) "should" do has no bearing on what the coaches will do. So you think this one recruit is going to be an awesome player but he plays an entirely different system, it's unrealistic to expect us to go after them.

DL: Balducci, Bair, Buckner, Carriger, Cottrel, Daniel may not have the combined * ranking some of you would like to see, but when you look at each player, you will find they fit very well with what we want to do. Balducci has dominated as of late. I give a great deal of stock to the Lineman who dominate/outmuscle/outwork their counterparts during all-star practices. I believe it's also been reported that Poutasi (OL), Buckner and OLB Castro all did the same thing. I'll take the guys who beat up the 5* any day of the week over them. Really, that's the best way to describe some of these guys too. They look like they want to beat you up. In a DL, that's a great thing.

LB: Castro and Bafaro. As mentioned above about Castro, he looks like a guy who could play as a true FR. He looks to be another nightmare of LB's that come off the edge for us. I don't know much about Bafaro but we've gotten tremendously better at recruiting LBs and again, once you start looking at the depth, you realize we're trying to find guys that can come in to play a back-up role. We're not having to find starters and that's a good thing for us. Yes, Kwon would have been nice but I don't think from a talent stand-point there is a whole lot "more" we can do with who was reasonable to get.

DB: Amoako twins, Daniels and Dunmore. Just like with RB recruits, if you are going to criticize these guys, Don Duckleone is going to slap you with a glove with Coach Neal's hand on it. Even if Oshay decides to do just T&F, we've got plenty of depth/talent to where we only needed to get guys that fit our system. We got quite a few earlier commitments than we have previously and that speaks to the changes in our program. Guys want to play for Oregon and it's no longer just regionally, its nationally.

Further, we've got a top 25 class. I don't care if it becomes Top 5 or #25, we get the players we need, not the ones that look good. ESPN just re-did the 08 class and guess what, we finished 2nd to Alabama who won 2 NCs during that time. Even while the media hoots and hollars about the "Return of Troi" we've got the better head to head record over the last decade, oh and that thing called 3-Time Defending Conference Champions. I get that LMJ, the greatest RB in team history just left and that DT, one of the best QBs (not the best) left too, but nobody, and I mean nobody expected Dennis Dixon and that 07 team to compete for a NC. Anybody who says otherwise is a liar. Why do I bring this up? Since Chip came to Oregon when has the offense not been amazing? Since he's been Head Coach, we only lose to the nation's best teams and we're considered one of the nation's best.

We're at the point as a school where a single loss may put us out of the NC game and playing in the Rose Bowl is considered a consolation.

If that doesn't drive home the point to simply enjoy this team and all the absurdities that come with recruiting, then you need my advanced technique!

Forgot to mention this post came from the war room. For some reason the graphics didn't travel when I cut and pasted. IDK why.

Sure, if I remember the picture correctly you shouldn't have a problem with being seconded. Although the award category might be something like "Most indelible Pornographic Image from Ducks Attack."

That was one those "I know TK is going to message me about this so we'll see how long it lasts" deals.

Although, I think that one might have to be nominated for a "lifetime achievement award" since I think it's been longer than a year.

I'll put BudLee up for "New-comer of the year" and we should probably have something for "Insider Info poty" too.

Do I get a special heading under my name if I win “new comer of the year” ?

Shouldn’t be too hard for me to win…I think the only other new comer is Quack12…and….well.

Sorry, Bud. I heard a rumor that the awards broadcast was pre-empted by ESPN in favor of an infomercial debuting Bobby Petrino's new autobiography, "Integrity: The Foundation of Football and Family In America".
