1990-91 DASL End-of-Season Statistics

Post by The Bean Regime »

Another season, another end-of-season article detailing various statistics! Yeah, I just copy this top part. New Addition though!

Some things to consider:
The time-based awards (monthly, weekly) are heavily influenced by games played
The best-worst games are decided at my discretion.
The best-worst games do not consider games where the player is in foul trouble. Sure, a Moses Malone game where he plays 15 minutes is probably the worst but that’s no fun. I want bricks and turnovers dammit!
I kept the weekly awards condensed as I figured no one is really interested unless your player won the award. So it’s a nice balance between giving the stats and saving me time.
Any positions listed are determined by box score (and thus played-at) positions, not the positions listed on the team roster page.

New Additions:
End-of-season positional rankings from yours truly! More details at the end.

Without further ado...

Bean’s End-of-Season Positional Rankings (Top 8)
Position is determined by played-at, not the position listed on the roster page
Awards listed to right. A = All-league, D = All-defensive, R = All-Rookie
(*) means they were listed at a position other than the one they played for the majority.
Must play 42+ games at position to qualify. Games played not considered otherwise. So while 55 games compared to 82 is going to be equal, the 55 might make the player ineligible if he split 38-17 at two positions where otherwise he would have made the 42 game cut.
Stats are at listed position ONLY. So stats may and likely will differ from the stats on the roster page slightly.

I try to take only this season in account, so no potential-considerations or lifetime awards. I do try to take team comps into consideration but naturally I'm not going to have a complete understanding of every team in the league.

Great article as usual! Although I notice Larry Nance missing on both the SF and PF lists.

Thanks!

He would qualify for SF with 50 games played at the position, and statistically definitely is his better position. He was actually one of the two closest considerations (other being John Stockton for #8 PG) for the list, as I feel like he could be argued over MRR (TOs) or Elliott (FG% and rebounds). His statline was 34.7 MPG, 17.4/7.1/2.9/1.4/0.8, 2.7 TOs and a 47.9 FG% at SF . Ultimately he missed it ofc.

Compared to his PF numbers of 33.2 MPG, 16.2/7.5/3.1/1.3/1.5, 2.7 TOs and a hideous 38.8 FG%.

First ROTM, then all-rookie team, and now this!? WHEN WILL IT END!?

But realistically Gathers had slightly better points and rebounds per 36, but I considered it basically a wash since you can't just discount a 6.1 MPG difference, though I did overall consider Gathers the better rebounder because letter ratings. So it came down to: Gathers with much better TOs, slightly better FG%, rebounding, and a slightly higher foul draw rate, or Ferry with a better FT% and better defense with some actual blocking. And as I've done in the other parts of the ratings, I leaned offense and efficiency.

Interestingly he has not played SF at all from 1988 onwards in the regular season. While the rebounding has given the Bulls trouble before, surrounding Cadillac with Cliff and Laimbeer has put the Bulls in a comfortable #11 in the league in rebounding differential at +1.7.

But yes, playing good PFs at SF seems to be "in" with Manning, Smith, Perkins, Kellogg, and Barlow all coming into the league at PF.

Can you explain why Tarpley is above Chuck? I only ask because you put their star lines directly next to each othe Barkley leads in almost everything

Prob bc Chuck averaging 37MPG - once adjusted to 36 Tarpley is probably ever so higher than Chuck . Bean and his damn per-36

Ah, Ferry had a poor close, I didn't notice that the advanced stat page ended at game 70, so I was showing Ferry as better in per 36 too.

Per 36 does favor Tarpley (20.5/17.7 for Tarpley vs 18.1/11.3 for Barkley) but also efficiency. Barkley shoots a 41.6 FG% and 58.3 FT% vs Tarpley's 48.2 FG% and 70.0 FT%. Just blown out of the water.

Apply the stats, in order of preference, to:

Charles Smith
inside, blocking, strength, jumping, offensive rebounding, handling

maybe one of the stats I couldn't do earlier dropped to where I can do them now. Hopefully not.

Not sure why I held off so long but he’s starting the season at SF and Isaiah is starting at SG.
