Ranking Oregon starting QB's careers since 1986

Post by GrantDuck »

If others have watched back sooner, I can only rank based on memory, so feel free to mix in guys or make your own ratings. This is also career ranking, so while Dennis Dixon and Vernon Adams might have had arguably a couple of the best single seasons ever and got some bonus points for that, overall career it hurt them a bit.

1. Marcus Mariota
2. Joey Harrington
3. Justin Herbert
4. Darron Thomas
5t. Akili Smith
5t. Dennis Dixon
7. Bill Musgrave
8. Danny O'Neil
9. Kellen Clemens
10. Chris Miller
11. Tony Graziani
12. Jeremiah Masoli
13. Vernon Adams
14. AJ Feeley
15. Jason Maas
16. Jason Fife
17. Tyler Shough
18. Brady Leaf

Have at it!

My ranking is based on who I’d want starting if I could have anyone back today

MM Goat
Vernon Adams Dude single handed year carried a team to 9 wins, that would have won 3-4 games without him. And if not for a cheap shot, that team probably makes the playoffs if Adams is healthy all year. He is a winner, period.
Herbert- with Moorehead might have been 1b
Dixon
D Thomas
Akili
Tie Joey / a healthy Aj Feeley
Clemens
Miller
Musgrave
Masoli - would be higher, but getting kicked out of school lowers him down.
O’Neil
Maas
Fife
Graz
Shough.

No one else was a real starter, unless the QB1 was hurt. So I won’t rank them.

I would probably go
1. MM
2t. DD
2t. Akili
4. Adams

if ranking your way... Akili was insane his final season at Oregon and we might have gone undefeated if not for Droughns' injury!

If we are talking just for 1 game, I'd take Joey over Akili (Joey was more consistent for sure) and DT.

Frankly, we'll never know how high Herbert could've been up this list because his supporting cast was total crap.

Musgrave was the QB when I first started following the Ducks. It's hard to see him ranked so low on these lists. He sure meant a lot to the growth of the program.

I agree with Justin being in the third spot but I can’t help the “what might have been”. He did not get a fair shake with the coaching chaos during his time at Oregon and certainly did not have the surrounding talent Marcus had, bottom line is he would have been ranked higher if given the chance to showcase his talent.

I would put Dennis at 4, Smith at 5 and Darron at 6, but agree Musgrave played an important role in bring the program to where it is today.

Musgrave was like Thomas with a superior skill set, but Vernon Adams type fragility.

It seemed like every time his version of the Ducks got on a roll, injury to Bill Musgrave, or one of his key supporting players stopped Oregon on the verge of greatness.

The talent pool available to the Ducks at that time was much smaller. Oregon relied heavily on filling the gaps on the team with, shall we say, less than stellar players, who were wiling to work their butts off and buy into what the coaches were peddling whole heartedly.

Just going to deal with the top of the list:

1. Marcus Mariota
2. Darron Thomas
3. Joey Harrington
4. Justin Herbert
5. Bill Musgrave

And then everyone else.
Willie Taggart is a dick.

Hot take. Joey wouldn’t have started for a UO team 2010-2020, except maybe part of 2016.

Oooh, I love hot takes.

Here's mine: Akili Smith would have been Oregon's second-most successful QB ever had he played during that same time period. :o

Oh yeah, Akili would have had 4000/1000 under Chip. But still never figured out how to read a D in the NFL. Honestly Smith would have been much better off to have RS his JR year at UO, and then played 98, and 99 under Tedfors. I think he would have been much more successful in the NFL with another year of coaching in college.
