Mirabal: $250k is a hefty raise. It seems like he deserves it. For whoever asked if we were bidding against ourselves Mirabal was mentioned as being pursued by Louisville. Scott Satterfield, their HC, was Mario’s OC at FIU and there has been some staff exchange. Is Mirabal worth that much? All indications appear to show he is.

Joe Salave’a: I was already questioning the ROI of Big Joe being so highly paid, and now he gets another $50k, he would have made almost $700k with the bonuses this year and another $50k being added. I really hope he doesn’t strike out on JTT like he did the first and maybe second time with Siaki Ika.

Bobby Williams: interesting that it’s a two year contract while everyone else got three years. He is getting long in the tooth, so maybe retirement is looming. Williams recruits very well and his reach is national. For 2021 he was credited as primary recruiter for Matavao Moliki and Terrance Ferguson. 2020 primary for Robby Ashford and Jaylen Smith, secondary for Jayson Jones (used to say primary), and for 2019 Camden Lewis, Trikweze Bridges.

As for his coaching, special teams outside of the dedicated specialists don’t get much practice at all. That’s part of the reason we see so many punters be holders now. The kickers, punters, and long snappers kind of do their own thing on the far field away from the rest of the team. The returners will come over now and then. Other than install they don’t really do 11 on 11. I’d guess this year there was even less of that because of keeping the groups superstar for covid tracing. The shortage of players that had Cale Millen playing out there was not ideal. Two kick-offs not recovered in two games, and a bad job by Delgado (returning punts since Travis Dye was more important with CJ out) to not clear out Mykael Wright. Only one great return (Wright @ Wazzu) for the Ducks but none given up. We found Kattleman.

Verdict: The special teams, outside of those three lost possessions and Camden Lewis, have been pretty good. Saban had demoted Williams, but he also hired him at LSU, with the Dolphins, and at Bama. If Saban works with you and then hires you three times that’s usually a good sign. Williams has also shown himself to be a pretty good recruiter. Kristian Williams looks like a great find, Jaylen Smith passed up older players, and the two TEs are big recruiting wins.
