What connection does it have to the team or school?

We (white people) love that song. That's why.

Also, Max's has been closing to Sweet Caroline forever. Feels right to me.

Why not? It is a common song played at many sporting events (most probably associate it with the Red Sox 7th inning stretch). Anything that gets the crowd involved and entertained is a good thing.

Sweet Caroline? That song makes me want to shout!

All kidding aside, I can’t listen to this song the same after I learned that aspiring pedophile Neil Diamond wrote it about 12yr old Caroline Kennedy. Now it just grosses me out.

I don't think it should become a 'tradition,' but have no problem whatsoever with playing random singalongs to keep fans engaged. Adding covid to what was already a trend of lower attendance to games nationwide, I think it's smart to come up with ways to make it so the game day experience is markedly different than watching from home.

My only gripe with it (and Shout) was that fans would belt out the lyrics to it but stay quiet as a mouse on 3rd and 4th downs.

I never knew about the song's connection to young Caroline Kennedy, so I looked up some info on that and it isn't nearly as creepy as it sounds without context.

https://www.biography.com/news/sweet-ca ... ne-kennedy

Long story short: He was trying to fit his wife's name into the song, but it just didn't work. He'd written down Caroline Kennedy's name in a lyric notebook years earlier because he liked a photo he'd seen of her as a girl, so he plugged the name "Caroline" into his song and it worked.
Willie Taggart is a dick.
