Fire Bobby Williams
We lose on special teams every week. Iowa State was particularly awful, but this game has been just as close. We're down 13 points there in this game alone.
When was the last time we blocked a FG/Punt, or returned a punt for a TD?
Pathetic special teams coaching. Has to be a change this offseason.

Agreed, but highly doubtful he gets fired. Many factors in place.GrantDuck wrote:We lose on special teams every week. Iowa State was particularly awful, but this game has been just as close. We're down 13 points there in this game alone.

Re: Fire Bobby Williams
The HC has to say kick it out of bounds on that punt. That said, I hope Williams retires. His units have cost us 6 points on FG and a TD on the punt return.

Re: Fire Bobby Williams
Team had no business trying to pull off a 0:28 second miracle in that spot, given how the game was going.
A fumble, interception, snap over the punter's head, blocked punt, or punt return was a far more likely outcome than THIS offense going 60+ yards in 0:28 seconds with no TOs.
Don't like the special teams play of course, but I'd say that was a desperate coach, grasping at straws, that put the team in a bad spot. Take a shot if you must on 1st and run the ball and run out the clock and go into the locker room 21-0, get the ball first in the 3rd, score, and maybe make it a game within reach. Panic move by the HC causes the whole thing from my perspective.

Agreed. Especially when we get the ball at halftime. Run it out, swallow the pride and get it back in the 2nd half.OrTDuck wrote:Team had no business trying to pull off a 0:28 second miracle in that spot, given how the game was going.

Its just awful coaching on special teams. With a little over ten seconds left, u dont stop up short and wait and expect the returner to call a fair catch. You ram through him! Coverage team has been horrible multiple seasons.

Williams is going to retire after the season, or move on to an analyst thing somewhere.
His contract is the only one out of the assistants that has no buyout clause for either side after February 2022 - his contract goes through 2023 but the others (Big Joe, Mastro, Mirabal) that signed two year extensions in January 2021 have the two way 60/25% buyouts through February 2023.
Special teams have been mostly crap. The only good things have been a few Mykael Wright returns, Kattleman end of last season, Cam Lewis this season until last week, and Blake Maimone punting in 2019.

That is some next level info for a casual fan to have.GoDucksTroll wrote:Williams is going to retire after the season, or move on to an analyst thing somewhere.

Re: Fire Bobby Williams
Public contracts. I probably shouldn’t have been that definitive with the Williams will retire statement, but it seems like the most obvious reason to write that into the deal. If he had done a one year extension it would have been too obvious if he’s retiring or being evaluated on annual basis.karlhungis wrote:That is some next level info for a casual fan to have.GoDucksTroll wrote:Williams is going to retire after the season, or move on to an analyst thing somewhere.

On Andre Dollar’s recruitment it says Mirabal is the lead recruiter, whereas Williams was the guy for TEs last year. Williams did bring us some good recruits in the past with his connections, but he’s just not good enough of a ST coach anymore or recruiter to justify keeping him on staff at $415k a year or at any salary.
Other interesting contract tidbits: if Mario leaves (and the assistants aren’t retained or don’t go with him or get other jobs) then they’re owed 60% of their salary. If they leave of their own volition for anything besides a head coaching or play calling coordinator job they owe 25% of their salary to the school.

He is an example of going through the motions to somehow justify all that $$$$$$he makes. I'd think he would care more than he does.
