Can someone explain how we close?

We had a 470-320yd advantage in yards and a 3-0 advantage in turnovers. Seems impossible to lose a game with those stats.

A blocked punt and fumbled punt tackled at the 2 are not counted as turnovers, but might as well be. Suppose you could also apply that to a turnover on downs in your own territory. Really, the defense’s inability to stop the run knowing it was coming, while having run D be their strength year round is baffling. Still hard to explain, but s*** happens. I still consider it a successful first season based on preseason expectations and a young staff.

Losing the 3 biggest games of the season is a pretty bad sign. Plus the OC is gone now so expect a significant step back for a very long time. And once we're in the New Mountain West then season ticket prices should hopefully become more affordable once people start bailing.

It is simply the end to another season, yes a bowl game, but a disappointing end to an otherwise good year. Lanning got punched in the face during the last three games and now Dilly and possibly some recruits……. Let’s see how Dan responds.

I don’t know if this is facetious or not. Chip recruits worse and his best season at UCLA was no better than Lanning’s first season at the helm.

Wow, truly epic collapse. Not as bad as the Alamo Bowl, but that wasn't entirely surprising because VA got hurt at halftime. This Civil War (or whatever the **** it's called) might stand alone as the biggest single-quarter collapse despite so much talent on the field.

Most underrated play of the game: OSU's pass interference on the last drive to stop a certain Franklin TD. That could have been the game winner.

Oh well. Go Cougs, I guess.

Was it just me or did the 4th downs today remind anyone else of the 2 pt conversions against Nebraska in 2016? I just kept wanting to yell “please stop” at the TV.

The only one I really didn't like was that first one when we should have just kicked a FG.

The other times, I think the problem was more of the play calling rather than the act of going for it. Perfect example was running Bo on like 4th and 3 rather than pass or hand off to a RB. Bo is clearly still hobbled and he had zero chance of converting on anything that wasn't essentially a quick dive forward. That play had him faking a handoff, then rolling out to look for an opening to run through. He had zero chance of making that happen and Dilly/Lanning should have known better.

I’m fairly confident that was a zone read, and Bo chose to keep it. Think it was also only 4th and 1. Looked like Irving would have had the first of Nix handed it to him, but I believe Nix made up his mind ahead of time that the defense would crash and he’d hold on to it. Nix even said after the game he made a mistake holding on to it, which leads me to believe it was a read.

He’s dealt with his first major blowout loss, two lost rivalry games, first big choke job/bad loss, and just lost his top assistant to a conference foe. It doesn’t get much tougher than that for a first year, but he’s gonna fight through it and be better for it and so will Oregon football.

I couldn't agree more and he also dealt with Spencer Webb's tragic death.

Some thoughts from Canzano:

Oregon is in good hands, too. Lanning will learn from his latest loss. I know Smith learned a lot in his first few seasons, amid some painful outcomes.

I saw the Ducks quarterback, Nix, on the field after the game. He was the last Oregon player to leave Reser Stadium and cross the street to the visiting locker room. He was moving slow and got caught in the throng of celebrating OSU students. UO offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham — arm extended — helped escort his star quarterback through all that grinning, shouting orange.

I don’t think there’s a ton of reason to be worried about our future. Yesterday should give you a little pause about Lanning and this staff but I agree, he’ll learn from it and do everything he can to fix what happened. He’s a huge “growth mindset” guy so he doesn’t run away from self-examination.

That doesn’t change the fact that yesterday was legitimately one of the worst losses of my lifetime. Been watching since I was 9 (1999); I’m 32 now, and that was the most pathetic effort I’ve ever seen. Even worse than the team quitting at Reser when it started raining in Helf’s last year, or the Alamo bowl loss, because there was no reason for it. We were dominating and our players flat out quit playing, especially our defense.

21 point lead with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and you allow 28 points when the other team doesn’t even attempt a pass? It doesn’t even feel real. It’s the type of thing that gets coaches fired.

Now, was it mostly the fault of this staff or the crappy culture left over from Cristobal? Only time will tell but, while the current staff isn’t blameless, I lean towards the latter. I expect a lot of defensive guys will be encouraged to hit the portal and a serious revamping to done on that side of the ball. This team under MC was on a serious downward trend and there’s only so much a new staff can do in one year. Between the portal and this next recruiting class we’ll likely see a drastically different team next year.
