Newest addition to Oregon's 2023 recruiting class is wing Sofia Bell out of Portland.

She has the potential to be a high level contributor. Point guard passing, a true jump shot with great mechanics, from a 6'1" player with good handles. Looks like you could play her anywhere from 1-3. Nice to have a guard of her height when you play a 3 guard lineup.

The fact that she is from Portland and a Duck legacy is a nice bonus.

So here is a challenge for Graves recruiting talent. Amari Whiting (my favorite commit in years) is as of today still committed. Her mother Amber, also her AAU and High School coach, applied for and got the head coach job at future Big 12 member BYU. No college coaching experience at all, even she seemed shocked she got the job. Amber is a type A+, confident and aggressive. She and her husband Trent finished their careers at BYU, and he had a big Senior year there. Their son Jace will be playing at Boise State.

Anyway, it would be Coach Graves biggest recruiting upset to keep Amari committed now.

When I saw that Whiting's mom get the job at BYU, I started wondering whether or not Graves could keep Amari committed. It'll be a bit of miracle if she signs and shows up in Eugene.

Amari will honor the commitment. If not, it will reflect badly on the program in Eugene.

How exactly does someone switching their commitment to their parent’s school reflect badly?

Her statement is revealing about the Ducks doggedness in recruiting. Oregon WBB coaches put in the work to land all the 5 stars they have brought into the program. Her de-commitment statement was also a huge endorsement of UO WBB at the same time.

I was thinking about this and, while I am disappointed too see Whiting de-commit from the Ducks, I can also see her being drawn to play (again) for her Mom.

When you think about it, Whiting gives her coach a big advantage in having a player with known strengths and weaknesses, but who is also able to help communicate (translate) what the HC is trying to establish with the rest of the team.

Avoid the favoritism occasionally seen in family situations, and establish good rapport with the rest of the squad, and it's much like having an assistant coach on the floor during the games.
