Singletary Fired - go after Harbaugh?

It's highly unlikely that he'd go back to his alma mater. The Wolverines would love to have him.....but he's got a good thing going right now in Stanford and I see him staying west of the Mississippi for now. I just don't see Michigan being a ligitimate powerhouse in college football now...or in the near future. Can you imagine them firing Rich Rod, scrapping the new offensive scheme that they just installed and starting all over again....

If Rich Rod doesn't work out, I think they'll go with another spread oriented coach since I doubt they would want to start over trying to get players for another system.

Exactly. It would take him at least 2-3 years to start to see real headway because of the type of players that RichRod recruited.

San Francisco wouldn't be a bad job, but he'd definitely need at least 1-2 solid free agent QB's to come in and then get rid of Alex Smith, etc. I wouldn't even keep him as a backup.

They have a good running game and have good players at the skill positions, other than QB. Actually, I think Singletary may have succeeded if he'd have just stayed out of the way and let Mike Martz run the offense. Martz is killing it in Chicago now, of all places.

They're pretty solid against the run, but their secondary needs help.

Honestly, I think the NFC West will be a lot better in the next 2-3 years from top to bottom, so to assume that Harbaugh would come in and start winning division titles in 1-2 years isn't realistic. However, I think he'd consistently field a good team every year that would be in playoff contention and more.

San Francisco has most of the parts to win some games next season. You're right that all they need is some help at QB and in the secondary to compete for the division title.

I feel bad for Alex Smith. Much like Harrington, he seems to be in a situation that's impossible to succeed in. I saw a stat that he's had a different OC every year he's been in San Francisco.

Just like Joey, if you haven't succeeded after a few years at all, then you're just not that good. And Smith does have some weapons on offense (Gore, Ginn, Crabtree, Vernon Davis), so he really has no excuse at this point to play as poorly as he has. Joey and Smith both were put in difficult situations, but they needed to make a lot more out of the opportunity than either of them did.
