It actually is uncommon, and a recruiting nightmare. Calipari is an exception to most rules, as many of the recruits he brings in (that matter, I guess) know they're one-and-done or in no jeopardy of ever losing a spot. Romar took a ton of heat for what he did and suffered because of it, but he's been able to turn his program around the last 2-3 years because he sits on a talent gold mine. As for Teondre imparticular, as you'll say further down, he's been forced to play 2/3 hybrid and I see no reason why he minutes will suffer to any great extent next season. He'll still get a ton of those minutes Singler sits for, and there should be more to go around as Singler might be forced to play inside more.Romar's done it. Calipari's done it. It definitely is not uncommon, especially when a new coach comes in. A lot of times, coaches want to bring in their own players. My guess is that Altman isn't very impressed with what he's seen from Sim nor Teondre. Altman wouldn't necessarily "force" Teondre out, but he'd probably give him a hint that he won't get much playing time if he decides to stay here. Coaches encourage players to transfer all the time.
There's also a difference between "encouraging" players to leave, as you're now suggesting, and flat out yanking Sim's scholarship and telling Teondre to hit the road, as you said earlier. Altman could "encourage" anything he wants, but if they say no, he's going to have a public relations crisis if he still does anything else.
The problem here is that you seem to want to pick players off the current roster who contribute (Sim, Teondre) but the most obvious choice, and the easiest player to extract, would be "the Big German". It was kind of odd to bring him in in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there was an agreement made before the season that the UO would fit the bill for a free year of schooling and, barring an extreme improvement in play, one year only. This kid is never going to do anything, and we had openings. Kid clearly isn't a diamond in the rough, and he has no reason to be here. We'll see. Altman absolutely invited him here. I don't think anyone really expected him to contribute this year. Kind of odd to recruit a raw player from a foreign country and then bail on him after a year.
[/quote]Teondre is a SG, he's only playing SF out of necessity. Since Jamil Wilson, Matt Humphrey, and Josh Crittle transferred and Mike Dunigan left the program, Oregon has had to play guys out of position. Joevan Catron is absolutely not a center. Singler has played PF when Oregon has gone small. Both Nared and Jacob have played center, even though they are clearly PF's
I agree with all of this, but Teondre isn't going to move back to SG next year, because we still have no 3's outside of EJ and the 2-guard position is going to be a lot more crowded with Brown and Kingma coming in, plus, apparently, this Minnesota kid. Jacob IS a 4, I agree, but he's going to play center again next year because he'll be a much better option than Kuemper will be.
