Opinions: When is EK let go and which recruits do we lose?
During today's game I got to thinking, aside from what the hell is our team doing on the court...when is EK going to be let go and which recruits do we lose?
I'm guessing we lose EK within 60 days (after the NCAA Tourney) and we lose Dunigan and Wilson.
I wonder if we can get Mark Few or someone just as good?
Thoughts?
GO DUCKS!!

Nah we won't lose Dunnigan he came here for early playing time word is he doesn't like EK. I do think we will probably lose wilson altho we may not he said he was closer to the assistant coaches then EK. SIngler will stay w/o a doubt and I think Jacob will as well. Its also not set in stone that EK is gone. I would like it but its not certain

To tell you the truth, I would be ok with losing 1 recruit or 2 if it meant getting a new coach. I know that seems harsh and I'm kind of heated right now, but that's how adament I am about getting rid of Kent. Will it happen? Your guess is as good as mine.
With the new arena, the expectations will and should be there to win every season. I think it's obvious that Kent will not do that.

If we got a quality coach like a Few I would bet we could retain all our recruits, though Stanford got a great coach and Sim bolted.

Why does everyone name Few as a great coach? He gets a pass through his league every year (although it is getting tougher the past few years) and a easier path through the tourney, but hasn't had the success Ernie has had in March Madness. If two elite eights aren't enough for Ernie to stay, Few has fewer with many advantages. What makes him so attractive to all you Few fans?

Duckgrad, here is why he is a great coach:
Consistency
Ability to sign less highly regarded players and still compete with the big guys
His teams always, ALWAYS, play with fire and compete
His teams play defense
(In this instance) This is his backyard, just like EK
It is HARDER for a coach to do what he has done at a school like Gonzaga than it would be at UO
What makes you think Few could not do what EK has done here? There is far more evidence that he would succeed than not.
We converted a grand total of 13 field goals last night. For the team that's just embarassing

I like Few as a coach but I think we should look around too. We could end up doing better than Few. What about Tubby Smith from Minnesota? Or Billy Grier from San Diego? Or the coach at Portland St. who just made 2 NCAA tourneys in a row?
With the new arena & all the extra's that come from Nike, Oregon is a pretty nice basketball destination.

I would take Tubby Smith, but Mark Few would not be an upgrade over Ernie more of a lateral move IMO. I think his teams and Oregon teams are pretty similar. Perimeter orientated and bad defense.

Great to hear that about Dunigan, I actually just threw his name in there as a suggestion...as for the others I guess we will just have to wait and see!roth wrote:Nah we won't lose Dunnigan he came here for early playing time word is he doesn't like EK. Its funny you mentioned that because I thought about rephrasing that because other than Few being suggested left and right I don't know much about him! Who are other alternatives would be a better question? And IMO we should have someone picked out first other wise we should just stay with EK because I'd hate to swing and miss!duckduckgoose wrote:Why does everyone name Few as a great coach? That would be the greatest risk of letting Ernie Kent go. There is no guarantee that we could get someone better and Oregon hoops could significantly regress.

Regress?? If we regress any further we will be playing with South, North and Thurston. I loved EK as the choice when he came in but if we have one good year in four that's just not good enough. Part of the issue is the Ass. Coaches as we have lost a great deal of good coaches. The year we played our best defense was the year the coach (I forget his name) came over from the women’s program. I have not seen any of our big men get better and I directly believe that ties to the coaching. Given all these things it is time for EK to say good bye on his own or be shown the door if he is unwilling.

Since 2001 gonzaga is around .500 against Pac-10 teams. That includes 1-4 against non washington teams. They did beat up on washington st for a couple years, but the cougs have beaten them now since they have improved. Also, Mark Few has only led Gonzaga to ONE sweet 16. They have lost in the first round 4 times and lost in the second 3 times. I don't find it all that impressive that they are just making the tourny because they have been beating up the powers of loyola marymount, santa clara, san francisco, pepperdine, and portland. Why do we want him so bad? Most people just want a change of scenery and aren't taking the whole picture into account.

Except they did beat UW even with Roy 4 or 5 strait and UW pulled out of the series. Also Few classes rate much lower than anything Kent has brought in yet Few continues to make it to the NCAA. Didn't they beat UConn last year also?
