While I agree it looks like we have the players to run a 3-4 its just we dont have the coaches. Coaching a 3-4 is way different then a 4-3. Alloiti has coached how long as a DC? and all he has ever run is a 4-3 he can't just switch to a 3-4 without bringing in someone with experience in that D. Also we dont have the D line to run a 3-4. You need a big run stuffing NT to run it and we dont have that.

See Haloti Ngata, have we ever run a 3-4 and did we run a 3-4 when Haloti was here?

Now, with all of these great athletes (LB's) on defense, the defense just needs to be simplified so that their athletic talent can be utilized immediately instead of making them learn "where to be" and think too much on the field. Our players should be attacking and making things happen, not sitting back, running around 20 yards downfield and waiting for wide open WR's 15 yards downfield to be running in front of them for easy first downs. I want to really get excited about the kids coming in, but I have to tell myself.... "same defense", again. So I don't. The current defensive scheme is a big waste of athleticism (and time from player's careers), in my opinion. LB's should lead the team in tackles.... not the CB's and Safeties.

That is exactly what I was thinking when I was saying we should go to a 3-4 or at least have some packages that utilize the big athletic backers we are bringing in and that we already have.

Hey guys let's go easy on the wholesale defensive change. These big athletic linebackers must like the way our defense is run now or they wouldn't be committing to play in it for 4 years. If these guys can drop back in coverage and pick up the TE and don't get fooled by play action then they can be very successful in the 4-3 and our defense won't look so inept at times.

If nothing else we build depth! Can't have enough fresh backers especially when we put up a ton of points and have defend the pass a ton. I'm kind of hoping one of these guys can be utilized like Mathews' bro at USC. Line him up all over the field as a speed rusher.

Great News! Gotta love the LB's. We certainly are getting a lot of good D players..interesting because i would think people would want to play for Oregon's offense, not their defense. But hey its all good. Never can be too deep with enough talent

Maybe they see the chance to play a lot since the offense scores so fast and often.

True. I think I remember that we had the most snaps on defense out of all the teams in the Pac-10. You would think that there would be plenty to go around with as fast as the offense scores

I agree with duck55 that there is a lot of potential to play with the amount of time that our defense is on the field. I also think that this might be something that CK is looking to change when he is named head coach. He might be bringing in someone that is very familiar with the 3-4 when he replaces Michael Gray.

The most in the country, just over 1000 defensive snaps including the bowl game.
