#16 UCLA @ #8 Stanford Pac-12 Championship

Still find it humorously dumb that two teams who just played last week are playing again for the Pac-12 championship, but it is so. Go Stanford, represent the Pac-12 and murder Wisconsin or Nebraska in the Rose Bowl.

Predictions?

The way Stanford is playing, I'll be pretty surprised if UCLA knocks them off. But there is the whole, "hard to beat a good team twice in a season" idea, so who knows.

But I plan to totally be rooting for a Bruin victory. The more Stanford wins here at the end, the more people might actually think that they are better than Oregon. To begin with, should they win again this week, it looks like they could actually jump LSU in the BCS, putting them only two spots below the Ducks. But should UCLA shock most people and beat the Cardinal Friday evening, then it will seem more like the Stanford victory over Oregon really was a fluke -- which is what we want people to think.

Yes: Call it sour grapes if you like (because it is), but I want Stanford punished for taking the Ducks out of the NCG discussion.

But look ahead to next year. We don't play USC and Tennessee will be rebuilding under a new coach. If Stanford isn't considered 'elite' because they lost the conference championship and didn't play in a BCS bowl we could have the same problem as this year--that we only win because we don't play anybody that is 'quality'. Besides, why give UCLA a championship to go along with their other recruiting advantages?

I'm supporting Stanford all the way.

Thanks, maxduck. I will consider your reasoning to be a "silver lining" if Stanford wins.

That said, I doubt UCLA can do much more that what they've done this year to assist in any recruiting. They've already way overachieved compared to what most anyone thought they could do this year, including beating the Trojans. They clearly seem to be well on their way to consistent relevance, such that in that sense the "damage" is already done in terms of their increased ability to keep recruits away from the Ducks.

Also, yes, we don't play USC next year, but we do play the Bruins, who I suspect will again be a little better than the Trojans (who might really start feeling the sanctions in terms of scholarships). Also look at what Arizona and ASU did in just one year under their new head coaches; who knows how good they might be next year. Maybe the Beavers once again are on a cycle where they're good for a few years. There might in fact be a good many solid conference teams to help the Ducks' SOS besides the Cardinal, who themselves may again prove to be formidable.

Not sure if they will win. But, I think we'll see a completely different UCLA effort and scheme this time around.

I find it hard to root against Stanford and I feel as though they've already fully earned their Rose Bowl bid so I'm hoping that they finish it off

I would think that a UCLA win is even worse for Oregon's image. The loss (in OT) to a top 8 Furd does not hurt us that much compared to their loss to the purple Dawgs. Additionally, Oregon and #1Notre Dame both going OT with Furd shows the parity between the 3 teams as top contenders.

The only loss that hurts our image is our loss to Stanford. They have proven themselves to be a solid team and a UCLA win won't change the way people view Oregon at all.

The expected rainy mudbath in Palo Alto this evening would seem to play right into Stanford's hands for their style of play. Will be very surprised if the Bruins ever really threaten the Cardinal tonight.
