The simplest explanation of redshirting is a coach has a player sit out a year in order to preserve their eligibility since the NCAA allows players 5 years to play 4 years.
Do any of the Mods feel like we may be missing out on some west coast talent because we are trying to go so national in recruiting? We used to make our living in the bay area talent. I am worried that we may not be making as much of an effort their because we are making so much effort on the east coast.

I'll let tony, mops, and jhop answer most this question.
But for the most part I'd say no, since lots of the west coast talent = California. And therefore, you'll see Cal, UCLA, USC, and now even Stanford in some cases working hard for the in state talent.

Also Fresno State, San Diago State, BYU & Notre Dame.
Yeah TK was right. SO far I don't think there is any west coast talent we are missing on. The only two we are really after with a chance for is Owa and Uko.
Owa just wants to go to Cal, and we are in top 2 for Uko. Not much you can do there.
Scroggins and Robert Woods are all SC from the start. I think the staff simply identified who they would have legit shots with that they wanted and it just happened to be they had more interest from east coast prospects.
Is there really that much of a difference between the weak/strong side linebacker positions? I know the LBs specialize in one or the other (or middle) but it seems like it should all be interchangable.
