I really do like your story better. I like hearing that some of these guys are actually better than their rankings. That's what Cristobal was implying about McKinley as well. Getting three-stars who play like five-stars is how Oregon wins.Groundswell wrote:

Guys this morning on Sirius said to ignore the stars. To many factors involved. Marcus is proofPhalanx wrote:I really do like your story better. There are some really good players in this classGoDucksTroll wrote:I love Johnson's game, I think he's going to be a rush OLB like Justin Hollins. You need a physical freak for that role; someone who can punch a LT/RT block away or run by them, all while being able to react to the run or drop back in coverage.
If Leavitt is that high on him then it makes me feel even better about it.

On a statistical basis you can't argue with stars.duckfan22 wrote:Guys this morning on Sirius said to ignore the stars. To many factors involved. Stars wise this is one of our best classes ever...duckfan22 wrote:Guys this morning on Sirius said to ignore the stars. To many factors involved. Re: 2018 Oregon Commit List
Gotta have the stars. Sure you can find a lowly ranked guy from every class who ended up producing above his ranking, or throw Marcus out there every time, but these are just ways to get more excited about our classes/guys. I watched Marcus' high school highlights for the first time this summer, and he was incredible even then. He just slipped under the radar. That's happening less and less nowadays. And sure there are teams that underachieve with 4-5 star tier one guys. But in every measurable way, you gotta have the dudes. We all know the stats. We are the only team in 20 years to even get close without the impressive class rankings. And the gap is even wider in the playoff age. Our new strength coach, Feld, mentioned how far we are behind Georgia strength/speed wise and said it's going to be a year or two project. Like his enthusiasm, and I'm sure he's going to pay huge dividends, but that Georgia team is also full of 4-5 stars.

There's a brand of Oregon fan that feels an imperative to believe that two stars are the foundation of any self respecting blue collar program and hard work and coaching—not talent—is what matters.Groundswell wrote:Gotta have the stars. Well, they're wrong. The numbers are clear and to consistently compete the HC needs to bring in top 10 type talent.
Mario knows this. He knows they need to recruit better. To his credit, he's taking steps to rectify the mistakes of the past regime. Can he do it?

Yeah, can't have that type of mentality if you want to consistently be a contender. We're not little brother with their "built not bought" mantra. Duck fans love to bring up Mariota, Maehl and other low star guys who dominated under Chip. Totally forgetting that those teams also had a bunch of star power. If we had Haloti Ngatas and Jonathan Stewarts every year it would make it a lot easier to be an annual Pac-12 contender.Duckenstein wrote:There's a brand of Oregon fan that feels an imperative to believe that two stars are the foundation of any self respecting blue collar program and hard work and coaching—not talent—is what matters.Groundswell wrote:Gotta have the stars. Great depth in this class, but we also need to get more than one top-100 recruit each cycle. Maybe this will be the year we break through on the recruiting front. We either have gotten or will get visits from six of the 28 current 247 5-stars. Having official visits in the spring should help, bring in some of those Southern guys before they commit to Georgia, Alabama, LSU.

Re: 2018 Oregon Commit List
So Oregon's final addition to the 2018 class is 4* ATH Bryan Addison. His commitment keeps Oregon's 2018 ranked #16 overall on 247 Sports when both Hall and Elliott's likely departures are also taken into account:
