The SEC had both ESPN/Disney and CBS in their corner.

But let’s face facts:
* The SEC has been the best football conference before the wealth gap grew, non-con records support that.
* College football is a bigger deal in the South. People care more, watch more, go to games more, spend more money.
* Tons of reasons why: tradition, lack of pro sports options, demographic recruiting advantages, corruption.

I’m all on board an eight team playoff.
- Auto bid for each P-5, highest non-AQ team, two at large.
- The Pac-12 would have benefited from that in 2011 and 2012, but not since.
- Make Notre Dame join the ACC or some conference.

CFP proposes 12-team playoff

Post by greenyellow »

Looks like the College Football Playoff committee is studying the feasibility and details of a 12-team playoff.

I find it interesting that the format takes the 6 highest ranked conference champs and they get an automatic bid, regardless of if they're Power 5 or not, then on top of that the 6 highest ranked teams. The best part about this format however is that the top 4 ranked conference champions (not 4 highest ranked teams) get the top 4 seeds and an automatic bye. This will ensure that the conference championship games are even more important! Cause while it's possible to see a 12-0 highly tanked team lose to fairly high ranked 10-2 conference foe in the conference championship and still make the playoff, by losing the game the 12-0 team loses home field advantage and the first round bye meaning they will still need to play hard to win, and the 10-2 team is fighting for a trip to the playoffs. So while conferences like the SEC are probably gonna get the winner and loser of the conference championship in the playoffs, the winner gets the first round bye making it still very important and this will avoid the SEC getting two teams with an automatic bye. While we loved the 2019 Pac-12 championship game, how much better would it have been if Utah was fighting for a first round bye and Oregon was fighting for a trip to the playoffs? In addition, if somehow an average 8-4 team gets into their conference championship game (let's say due to post-season ban) and wins cause cause say the favorite has a QB injury, then there's a chance that average team won't get an automatic bid if there are 6 higher ranked conference champs.

While this isn't perfect to me, I certainly find this format to be an improvement and I'm just really happy to see the Pac-12 championship game be significant.

It seems like this format is getting closer and closer to happening, I hope we get interesting matchups with it like Oregon vs Alabama.

I'm not a fan of the top four teams having an extra bye week and rest and recovery, while the other teams have another week of games and wear and tear. College football isn't like basketball, where you can have a play-in system. Every additional game played or extra week of rest has a very significant effect on performance. A eight team format where every team plays the same number of games is more fair. Also, games played on "neutral" sites is very subjective and we tend to get screwed on that end.

I'm definitely torn on the HFA for the top 4 seeds as it does give a huge advantage and the wear and tear of an extra game in college football is greater than any other league. However on the positive side is it's going to make conference championship games matter more with this format where the top 4 highest rated conference champions get it. If it was just the top 4 teams, then why would 12-0 #1 Alabama bother putting in their starters and trying to win the SEC championship against 11-1 #3 Georgia? If Bama loses that game no way they drop below 4th. At this point the SEC championship game is simply for bragging rights which can/does matter, but it's nothing compared to playing for a trip to or advantage in the CFP.

Whoa, the committee recommended expansion to 12 teams. Four teams get first round byes.

Under this format Oregon would have made the playoffs 11 times since 2000: 2000, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010, 11, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20.
