QUACK! WBB lands Washington G Ari Long

Post by greenyellow »

Kelly Graves continued his transfer hot streak by adding Washington G Ari Long. A former top-50 G in the 2023 class who averaged 4.2 points in 10 minutes a game last year.

The handling of Ari Long by the UW coach was similar to how Stanford lost Lauren Betts. Long and Chloe Briggs came in as the 2 highest recruits they have had since Barnes was coach. Briggs plays ok and gets 20 minutes per game. Long the higher rated recruit starts hot in the first 3 games then her minutes disappear despite good per minute production (much better then Briggs who ends up with 3 times the minutes). UW wasn't going anywhere and it wouldn't have hurt and probably helped to give your blue chip recruit more than 10 minutes per game with some DNPs to boot. Same thing happened with Betts at Stanford, comes in as the number 1 recruit in the country, has some of the best per minute production on the team and they only gave her 9 minutes a game her freshmen year. She transfers and is All Conference at UCLA the next year.

Long averaged over 35 points per game as a Senior and averaged close to 50 in her last 7 games. Her team won, she also led them in assists, steals and rebounds. She may bust, it sometimes happens, but she has a real scorers mentality that we didn't have enough of last year. Super high ceiling player who can create her own shot at 3 and mid range. Maybe the UW coach didn't like her defense as that is what she is obsessed with, but Oregon will play a lot of zone and she's a straight A student and coaches kid, if she had defensive deficiencies I'm sure we can work around that. In her UW season she had only 3 turnovers in 183 minute, love that.
