WBB upsets #12 Baylor
The new-look Oregon WBB has their first big win of the season by pulling the 76-74 upset at home against #12 Baylor. Deja Kelly led the way with 20, Alexis Whitfield had 16 points, and Nani Falatea contributed 12 points off the bench.

It’s nice to be back and have a competitive team. This year we have more speed, length and athleticism. Not as good as the Sabrina years but definitely a step in the right direction.
The major key is to have Kyei available as she’s our one true center. Last year we didn’t field a true PAC12 caliber team. I feel like it’s gonna be a fun year.

The makeover of this team in just 1 season is wild. I have been impressed with their depth and just overall attitude and hustle. It remains to be seen how they will react to some tough times, but if they stay relatively healthy, it looks like they should be able to enter most games with a legit hope of being competitive. The very best teams will still probably thump them on most nights, but if all goes well, this looks like a team that has a shot to be in the bubble conversation for the NCAA Tourney.

Yeah I think getting Kyei into game shape will be key. Besides her defensive and rebounding presence, when she can get established down low, there's not a lot many teams, especially teams without a lot of size like Baylor, can do to defend her other than double or triple teaming her, which can lead to kick-outs for wide open 3s.

Very nice from a team that only had 3 able bodied P5 players for the last half of last season to one that had 9 hold there own last night. Baylor though not tall is a rugged physical team. With Kyei on limited minutes and mobility and Etute the Ducks strongest and most physical player gone for a few weeks to play with her National team, I wasn't expecting Oregon to hold up against Baylor.
Deja Kelly who was deferring to her teammates in the first 3 games decided to show everyone who the big-dog is against a real opponent.
Hat tip to Sofia Bell who they finally put on Walker when she was on that seemingly unstoppable run in the first half and Bell really slowed her down. Would be cool if she could be used to slow down JuJu and Kiki when we face the So Cal schools in league play.

But make no mistake, the Ducks almost frittered this one away after having a 16-point lead early in the fourth quarter. I suspect there will be lots of growing pains as these ladies learn to play together and win together.

And the Ducks have been rewarded today by entering the AP Top 25 at #25 (Baylor dropped to #17). It means next to nothing in college basketball, especially this early in the season. But it's still fun to see. Been a while.

Hopefully this allows the ghost of Sabrinas past to start to get away from the team and they can build their own identity.

Both men/women's Baylor teams not having their best starts. I think the men's team took the greater beating though.
