Re: Other Guys Transfer Portal - 2024-25
If true, Lanning informing Tennessee that Nico was shopping around only reflects well on him. It prevents accusations of tampering and also upholds a certain honor when a player not only attends another school, but is also under contract. Coaches SHOULD know if their players are shopping around, and it would be underhanded for another coach to entertain stealing that player without letting his current coach know. This is a fairly new situation and precedents are being set for how the process and the behavior of all parties ought to go. I like to hear that the coach of my favorite team is keeping himself above board, and it's pretty silly to read articles wanting him to discuss any of this publicly.

I agree with all of this. And this isn't a walk on punter or someone buried down the depth chart. This is your alpha, the commander of your ship. The mutual all in commitment and Trust is paramount. Good friend of mine is a dumb Husky fan and called Lanning a snitch. I said BS if you have the keys to the castle like Nico, shopping around while keeping Tennessee as a likely fall back option is shady. You think you're that good then make it known, look coach in the eye like a man and, while it may sting, you don't lose respect in this way. I mean come on watching his last game of the season several months back, all I could think was there's no way he staying at UT.Phalanx wrote: ↑Sun Apr 13, 2025 6:48 pm If true, Lanning informing Tennessee that Nico was shopping around only reflects well on him. You're the alpha, put your name on it and act like it. Top dogs don't lurk secretively in the dark, plant your flag young man and own it. Be up front and honest, let them pivot and regroup ASAP, and get out on the market if you think you're worth it. Keeping Tennessee as fall back is Bush League. New World in college football and I guess we are all learning along the way.
Hope Nico learns from this situation and redeems it for the better

After posting all that, I just read a rumor that Tennessee is now trying to go after QB's from other schools. I give up.

Former Oregon RB Byron Cardwell is back in the portal. Cal is looking a lot like the Pac-2 schools, as now Jack Endries (NFL-caliber TE) and star RB Jayden Ott are both in the portal, as well.

Yeah Cal got stripped of all their key offensive talent.

They lost 4 scholarship RBs since their spring practices ended. Rough spring for Cal to now have to rebuild their entire RB room save for one guy.StevensTechU wrote: ↑Tue Apr 15, 2025 6:47 am Former Oregon RB Byron Cardwell is back in the portal. Close, looks like UCLA might be the place.StevensTechU wrote: ↑Tue Apr 15, 2025 6:04 am "And now taking the field for the Oregon State Beavers, Nico Iamaleava, who is rumored to have an NIL deal with Reser Salsa in the neighborhood of $300k annually."

And it sounds like he is all but confirmed to UCLA. Dude gives me serious DJ U vibes. 5 star guy that doesn't live up to the hype, isn't a great leader, and bounces around.

I don't know that I would say he hasn't lived up to the hype. He had a rocky first year as a starter. In October, he was garnering Heisman hype, but obviously didn't end the season there. He's a cut above DJU, but how far above I think is yet to be determined.pdxduck2013 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 16, 2025 4:33 pm And it sounds like he is all but confirmed to UCLA. I don't think ucla is confirmed quite yet. I'm seeing that Iamaleava hasn't decided to sign with them yet and ucla okay with waiting for him. Kind of seems like UCLA isn't high on him, but they'll take him off he decides to go there

What's the comparison in take home pay between making $2.25 million in East Tennessee versus 1.75 in Los Angeles?

Couldn't say, but my guess is he'll be making a fraction of what he was at Tennessee. His family is trying to save face by saying it's about the offensive scheme, not the money. I think everyone knows that's bs, and him not signing with ucla yet probably means he's waiting for all the chips to fall during the transfer period to try and maximize his earnings at this pointStevensTechU wrote: ↑Sun Apr 20, 2025 8:05 amWhat's the comparison in take home pay between making $2.25 million in East Tennessee versus 1.75 in Los Angeles?

Before I say it's a bad look, it's just what the sport is. Coaches have done it for decades, so have administrators. Players doing it within the rules (or lack thereof) is just life.
