PLEASE NO MEHRINGER LANNING!

Post by OregonFan4Life »

I understand the defense has been bad but our offense has gifted them 14 points and given them a short field on another TD. I think Hampton will be an upgrade but we 100% need to completely change/revamp the offense. I want to start a petition to not hire Mehringer but bring in someone with experience, a proven playcaller! We can’t be taking risks on unproven playcallers again, we can’t keep having offensive letdowns in big games (3rd year in a row our offense fell short in a rematch, largely due to the strategy). LANNING NEEDS TO RECOGNIZE THAT THE OFFENSE NEEDS A COMPLETE REVAMP AND BRING IN AN EXPERIENCED AND COMPOSED OC/PLAYCALLER!

Not doubting your take, but what makes you think Mehringer will be terrible, and what makes you think Hampton will be great? I’m unaware of any recent play calling by either, and nobody gets an eye on anything at practice. I think we are all blind at this point on either hiring.

Hampton has DC/playcalling experience unlike Mehringer, plus Lanning is a defensive guy and he will always have his hands in the defense. Mehringer has no experience and I think what we saw is the offense needs a complete identity shift, not more of the same stuff. I think Lanning needs to hire a grown man with experience to lead the offense and not take a risk on another guy that has 0 OC experience.

Agree, if we have natty aspirations next year then i’d rather roll the dice on an OC, who is a QB whisperer.

Has Mehringer already been announced as new OC? If so, there is no way they will go with someone else based on this game. Lanning likes the Stein offense.

Not official but there’s lots of rumors he’s getting the job, but it was denied by Lanning.

PLEASE NO MEHRINGER LANNING!

Unless he’s also playing right tackle, it feels irrelevant. When you lose every time they know you’re running, the problem isn’t play calling, it’s execution. Pin that blame wherever you want - player, position coach, blocking scheme, talent evaluators… don’t care.
Our line was handled like a…. I’m too many drinks in to finish this analogy gracefully.

That said, muzzling Dante all game, rather than letting him sling it before it was 3rd and forever…. That was unforgivable. They were protecting him like overbearing parents.
Down 30 and more concerned about his level of zen than scoring points.

I see lots of blame being pointed at this player and that player, this position group and that position group, this coach and that coach when in reality there is more than enough blame to go around after an ass whopping like that. QB not reading a defense correctly (my guess is lack of film study or comprehension/retention), holding on to the ball to long and waiting to long to step up, linemen missing blocks, getting beat, missed tackles and assignments, poor pass coverage along with a lack of pressure, poor play calling, unable to read the flow of the game. All this happened, most of it self inflicted some of it forced by a well coached team. One thing is clear a lot of work still needs to be put into this program.

Muzzling Dante.....the first play of the game he had a #11 wide open for a TD and elected to throw a pick 6.

If anything he muzzled Dante by not training/developing him to progress through his reads and anticipate throws consistently and stay composed when the pocket collapses. Stein as the QB coach deserves a lot of blame for Dante’s lack of improvement since he’s been at Oregon.

I said it before, but I do think it could be beneficial to bring in an experienced co-OC and co-DC to pair with our younger playcallers.

For Co-OC: Someone like Warren Ruggeiro.

For Co-DC: Someone like Justin Wilcox or Bob Gregory. (Although if we could somehow get Pete K as co-DC to pair with Hampton, that would be a slam dunk).

Agree 100% we need more experience in our coordinators but Lanning is young and so are those he seems to know and value.

After blowouts in the last game the last 2 years and showing he has a hard time beating a team the second time playing them in a season (OSU, UW, IU), it shows a bit of a lack of growth and adjustments. I trust with experience, Lanning will get there but it may take some more unexpected, embarrassing losses.

And clearly out coached at a minimum in the first half of all 3 of those games. The second Washington one, Oregon was the much better team and on a roll coming in. It’s concerning.
