Altman Retires
Well, a lot of your got your wish. Altman has suddenly retired. We'll see how it goes. Surprised to see it happen this close to the season, so hopefully it's not health related or something along those lines. I think that really puts a damper on the potential of this season, as I don't see Stubblefield as nearly comparable as a head coach.

Wow sad. Legendary coach. Sucks he couldn't have done it right before the season, but I'm sure he has good reasons for it.
He will be missed!

Very odd timing, hopefully he and those close to him are healthy and ok.

Re: Altman Retires
The worst part is there's a narrative already that Tony Stubblefield will be one of the front runners for the head coaching position next year. We need a fresh start IMO.

Re: Altman Retires
I just went through the list of winningest coaches of all time. Altman is #16, which most of us know. But no coach ahead of him ever coached in the Pac-12. So, he is the winningest coach to ever coach in the Pac-12. That's pretty historic!

Re: Altman Retires
Whoa! This is shocking news at this point of the year.
I also hope everything is okay with him and his family as the timing suggests something other than basketball.
Definitely gives Stubblefield a try out for the job, but trying to hire a full-time right now would be difficult.
Will be interesting to see how much the AD wants to put into basketball. I hope it's a lot cause I'm a basketball guy, but nothing I've seen to this point supports that wish.

Re: Altman Retires
I hope its not health related and he enjoys his retirement. He has definitely earned it.
If its not health related, kind of feels like it was done to handcuff the incoming recruits to the team since its too late for them to transfer and play somewhere else if they want. Also gives Tony a full roster he helped build that he can coach.
Since NIL, basketball feels like an afterthought at the UO though. Not sure what can be done to change that.

I believe there is a special portal window for Oregon players due to Altman retiring, I wonder if anyone on the Oregon roster ends up transferring.

Re: Altman Retires
I wondered if he was going to retire when he was saying in pressers that Stubblefield did all the work to rebuild the team. It's a weird thing for a head coach to say. I think Coach Dana has been contemplating this for awhile, but that doesn't preclude the possible health issue. I hope he is okay, and he has been a legend at Oregon. The new NIL situation is weeding out a lot of the old school coaches and that may be the case here. I will miss knowing that our coach was better than most of the coaches he faced. Probably not the case going forward.
Nine times he went to the Big Dance while at Oregon (Covid prevented a tenth), and never lost in the first round. Nobody wanted to face his teams in March (77-32 while at Oregon), and he sent home several teams who were seeded higher than him wondering what the heck just happened. Whoever comes after will have big shoes to fill.

Re: Altman Retires
I always thought Altman was a bit underrated nationally. He's been one of the best and always seemed to maximize the talent he had. That Final Four run might be my all time favorite UO sports moment. Hoping the best for him in retirement.
Oregon basketball has definitely fallen behind in the NIL era. I'm really hoping they take a chance on a younger up and coming coach.

I can't imagine anyone transfers, as most teams won't have roster spots to bring them in this late in the game.OregonFan4Life wrote: Wed Oct 07, 2026 11:15 am I believe there is a special portal window for Oregon players due to Altman retiring, I wonder if anyone on the Oregon roster ends up transferring.

Yeah pretty unlikely at this point. But I guess it's possible a guy or two could transfer.droop10 wrote: Wed Oct 07, 2026 3:12 pmI can't imagine anyone transfers, as most teams won't have roster spots to bring them in this late in the game.OregonFan4Life wrote: Wed Oct 07, 2026 11:15 am I believe there is a special portal window for Oregon players due to Altman retiring, I wonder if anyone on the Oregon roster ends up transferring.

Players won’t be allowed to transfer right away because Oregon named Stubblefield the interim head coach, by NCAA rules. By the time players can transfer it will be too far into the Fall schedule. This was designed to keep rosters intact.

He would have won a national title here if Boucher hadn’t gotten hurt. That year was a pretty incredible high water mark.
