Probably best for the program, and hopefully for Altman, but I’m still sad. He was an incredible coach and made so many players better. I will really miss going into tourney games knowing Altman was probably going to coach circles around the other teams coach. He’s one of the GOATs whether the college basketball world recognizes it or not.

The best way to honor his legacy is to spend this season conducting a real coaching search and hiring a great coach, not settling for something easy.

Hall of Famer. Short of 800 wins. Ridiculous career. Completely understand moving on. He hates having complete turnover of the roster every year now. He hates NIL in general. He is a teacher. Today’s game is too brutal with player turnover for the way DA wants. Possibly, if a Blue blood comes calling, he gets back. But doubtful.

Yeah, this is a big ouch. He was a class act and really raised the standard of Oregon basketball. I'm worried that he'll be a hard act to follow.

Definitely gives Stubblefield a try out for the job, but trying to hire a full-time right now would be difficult.
Will be interesting to see how much the AD wants to put into basketball. I hope it's a lot cause I'm a basketball guy, but nothing I've seen to this point supports that wish.
I don't see Stubblefield as the answer to replace Altman. Yes, he's familiar with the team, the University, how things work, etc, but he's also had 2 other head coaching jobs and had a combined 30-66 record at those stops.

I a way, it seems like it would be another "Mark Helfrich" type of hire, and we all know how that went after a couple years.

I've heard of Billy Donovan as a potential replacement. Someone else mentioned Bryce Drew. I think we need to get a proven young head coach who's a stud recruiter, who's a very good coach and has had success with NIL. Of course, we can always try to coax Mark Few to Eugene again.

Yeah Stubb ain't it. Seems like a great guy, but he's not going to send our team to the tournament year after year when playing in the Big Ten. \

It's a little bit of a bummer Altman didn't retire earlier this year because there's been so much turnover. But I guess next year will likely be similar...

Given who the stakeholders are in the program, there's no way Oregon retains Coach Stubbs as their top head coach. They can easily go after a top mid/high-major HC or a top P5 assistant while maybe shooting for some of the bigger names potentially available (i.e. Billy Donovan.) If they don't go after those, then we truly know how much the AD values the MBB program. There's no reason they can't be a top-tier Big Ten program even with the FB program getting the bulk of the resources.

He had some bad luck lately. No post season due to COVID on Payton's senior season, a really strong team. Also, the denial of Dante's final year. Both years, with injury luck, could have been final four teams.

I can't say that I'm real optimistic about Stubblefield, but I guess we'll find out soon enough. Altman did say something to the effect that he was just not given the support or resources at DePaul to succeed there. But given that the official announcement of Altman's retirement included that a national search for a permanent head coach would commence after the season, it doesn't appear that the AD regards Stubblefield as a permanent solution, either. Though if the team were to have good success this year, he would surely be given an interview and have a realistic shot.

As I stated elsewhere, I felt like this team -- assuming no departures given Altman's sudden retirement -- was decent if we have Ewin and no significant injuries.
