“No one in their right mind should want Lanning gone.”
I totally agree, but 90% of this chat after losses is not in a right mind.
To those of you that screamed from the mountaintops about wanting Stein fired, how’s that working out for us? Have you seen UK’s record? Did you watch them play today?
I get it, there is passion. But wanting to turf everyone after every loss is not a solution.

Sorry bud, Mehringer needs to be turfed ASAP. No question. To be so unprepared, and lost, after two weeks of practice. Zero excuses.

I really hate how much fans are bringing up Will Stein. Yeah he’s doing great at Kentucky, good for him, but at Oregon there were some fundamental issues with the Oregon offense, mainly execution issues and over reliance on pre-snap movement to fool opposing defenses. Plus remember all the complaints about how little Sadiq got the ball last year? He didn’t always do well at getting the ball to the weapons outside of the predictable screens.
I was one of those that wanted Will gone, until it was reported Dan was going to be lazy and hire Drew, then I knew we were in for a downgrade.
But why should Oregon fans want anything but an elite offensive playcaller? This is Oregon we’re talking about! If we can get a $50M roster then why should we settle for the coaching staff? We should’ve been able to go out and get an upgrade from Will, and Dan did quite the opposite and is facing the consequences for his arrogant and lazy coaching hires.

While I don’t disagree this also isn’t a new issue. Every duck fan was worried about these two weeks off because Lanning’s teams almost always play terribly after time off. I have a hard time convincing myself that firing Mehringer will solve problems that were present long before he was OC.Everythingsducky wrote:Sorry bud, Mehringer needs to be turfed ASAP. Will Stein isn't winning because he suddenly figured out how to call better plays. He is winning because he found an OC who can do it better than he can.
Lanning needs that energy.

Seven turnovers and those danged failed two points head shakers. Still could have won. Play Thomas and Smith and develop the team?

The “Will Stein is performing well because he hired a better OC and QB coach than he is” is intellectually lazy and completely twisted to fit the narrative of the Stein haters who are raw over this UCLA loss. I get it. It sucks. It hurts.
But if you couldn’t see that Stein was a well-above-average OC, there is no pleasing you.
Sloan is very good. But so was Stein.
I’ll take our success in 23, 24 and 25 over LSU’s any day. Stein was a big part of that success.

Can anyone explain Raiola's floating passes?

Agreed. According to FEI, Stein coordinated the 1st, 2nd, and 5th ranked offensives in the country during those 3 years. Which begs the question: If 3 years in a row of top 5 offense isn’t good enough, then what exactly would be considered good enough for these fans?bdkipe wrote:The “Will Stein is performing well because he hired a better OC and QB coach than he is” is intellectually lazy and completely twisted to fit the narrative of the Stein haters who are raw over this UCLA loss. You’ll have PezSez and OF4L jumping on here saying that Stein only built his offensive reputation beating up on cupcakes and ignoring the fact that advanced analytics and grading, not to mention the respect of his peers OVER HIS CAREER BODY OF WORK place Stein in elite company.
This has become a fanbase in which a vocal minority has bought into the lightning in a bottle that Cig caught at IU.
Mehringer is not the answer, however, turfing the entire staff is not the answer.
Hell, we are making SEC fans look SANE. Kirby hasn’t won a title since the 2022 season and there are those of you on here, if you were Georgia fans, would have demanded 2 HC changes by now.
Live in REALITY. Yes, obviously minor tweaks and staff changes are needed and will be made. However, during Dan Lanning is insanity. Pure insanity.

B1G does clarify the error on the spot at the end of the game:

Props to Cig, but Indiana winning a title has literally zero to do with anything I've said. Indiana is Indiana, props to them for winning. I only really care about Oregon. This has become a fanbase in which a vocal minority has bought into the lightning in a bottle that Cig caught at IU.
It was a mistake for Dan Lanning to not conduct a national search for new coordinators. If he felt his assistants were qualified, then he could have told them to throw their applications in the pile. The problem is he didn't even try to find the best candidates for the job. This isn't even really a football thing, it's a general life thing.
National searches brought us Chip Kelly and Dan Lanning. Yeah, also Willy Taggart. You can't win them all, but you've got to at least try. That's what these people are PAID MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to do.
Willie Taggart is a dick.

As mentioned in other places, a mid-year OC new hire, would probably have to come internally. Not optimal, unless Lanning has his eyes on a junior coach he thinks is ready. Doubtful. Me thinks we probably have to play it out, take our lumps this season, then hopefully get someone with great experience and a history of great scheme and play calling. Cut some of the fat off players salaries, and use that to get a great offensive mind. It’s growing more obvious the last couple years, that great coaching in many cases, trumps the higher rated players. UCLA’s roster isn’t loaded with the talent UO has. Great coaching brings out the best of what a team can offer. Indiana, and now UCLA, are clear examples of great scheming, and outsmarting the opposition.

Re: #21 UCLA @ #13 Oregon (Oct 10, Sat 12:30 PM CBS)
I listened to the QB11 podcast and thought I’d summarize it for the forum, super long post coming:
1) Started off talking about the offense. Obviously there are a lot of issues, and things that should be corrected before next season. They said the #1 issue on offense is the OLine, they are not being coached or developed, and both agreed, Dan should fire Terry now, before the Nebraska game. They said fire him, give Kavanaugh interim job and go hire Jim Michalczik for next season. Obviously other coaches should be replaced before next season, no point in doing it now, except Terry, who has done a horrible job developing OLine. Doug questions if Love is the right guy cause the OLine looks weak, and QB11 said they look weak cause their technique is horrible. Guys aren’t getting better, even veterans have the technique of someone fresh out of high school. QB11 goes in a bit of detail as to why their technique is embarrassingly bad, but people on this forum seem to know enough about football to see their technical deficiencies.
2) They agreed that Mehringer should NOT be the OC going forward. QB11 said he hopes Drew is humble enough to accept a demotion to TE coach as he is a good TE coach. They said not everything can be blamed on him, not his fault Terry royally screwed up the OLine and Dylan essentially threw the game, but there’s some major schematic issues, the passing game lacks creativity, he doesn’t know how to scheme to get our weapons the ball. They brought up changing playcallers midseason, said they guess consider Douglas or Samples but they have to know it’s not an audition, the OC next year is an outside hire. But also it’s fine to keep Drew the rest of the season, no point in changing anything now, too late to change the broke offensive structure/philosophy.
3) Raiola should never start a game at Oregon outside of injury, and he certainly shouldn’t start next year. One of the worst QB performances they’ve ever seen at Oregon, even worse than Braxton Burmeister. Fans want to blame Ka’ai but he’s been the same QB since his Sophomore year of high school with a complete mess of footwork. Then he gave up in the second half and threw what QB11 called “yolo balls” which was just tossing up the ball not caring who comes down with it, just lobbing crap up cause he gave up basically. QB11 said Dan’s seat shouldn’t be hot but if he rolls out Raiola next year fire him. But they also didn’t blame Ka’ai, they said at this point in his career he’s had enough voices to tell him to fix his footwork and stop throwing off his back foot, but he insists on continuing to do it. Why? Who knows, laziness? Arrogance? Mix of that and others?
4) Defense was fantastic, not perfect, but an A game. LB’s getting better each week, Washington is healthy and he and Bear are destroying the interior, CB’s amazing, edges are great, and the young safety Devon Jackson was great. Koi played a better game and QB11 thinks fans hating on him for the UCLA game are dumb, he played his best game of the season. Defense is getting better, and this defense alone can get this team to 8-4 or 9-3, if the offense can have somewhat of a pulse. They did discuss the defensive coaching staff and once again brought up if Michalowski is the right man to coach LB’s.
5 They felt guys never quit, even on offense, and that’s good to see. Gut check time, what is this team made of?
6) They want Dan to make a legit call for Chip next season, they want a proven OC, it’s clear the offensive philosophy and this team needs a real OC with experience, or as I call it, a grown man. QB11 called the offensive coaching staff a frat house, and it needs more experience. They were also cool with Norvell once he’s fired at FSU.
7) They didn’t call for Ka’ai to get fired, but understand he will probably be a victim of the OC change and are ok with that. Again, can’t blame him for Raiola, but just a necessary change with the hiring of a new OC as usually a good OC wants to coach QB’s himself.
8) Discussed who should start against Nebraska if Dante is out again. They said clearly Akili isn’t an option, so it’s Brock or Raiola. Said if Raiola doesn’t have a good week of practice start Brock, otherwise start Raiola simply because as bad as he was, with Brock you are so limited, but if you start Raiola you need to dial up a lot of easy passes.
9) They feel bad for the receivers, QB11 even said he wouldn’t blame Dak for transferring. Said other coaches can dial up plays for their stars, it’s malpractice more plays aren’t dialed up for Dak. They said there are some dialed for Evan, but that’s cause he’s a slot receiver and since Dilly the offense was designed to feature the slot receiver and it carried over to Will and now Drew too, but it should’ve evolved with a weapon like Dak.
10) They still believe in Dan but don’t believe he gets the “young coach” excuse, he’s in his 5th year, it’s time to own up to his mistakes and make needed changes, and if he doesn’t then he’s allowing the crosshairs to move from guys like Drew and Terry to himself.
