Avoiding another epic rebuilding process in two years

Just thinking out loud here. We have three upperclassmen under scholarships right now (Porter, Catron, Longmire) that will come off the books between now and when we have to re-stock the program after our comically large sophomore class graduates (I believe we have eight sophomores on scholarship). We have two freshmen right now, both of whom should be around as seniors. Luckily, both are legit Pac-10 starters.

That makes these three scholarships we have to offer over the next two years HUGE, IMO, if we want to avoid another epic rebuilding job that we've undergone in seasons past (2001, 2005-06, 2009-10). We dug ourselves out of the first one in only one year, it took Malik/Leunen's class two years, and we're currently in year two of our latest rebuilding job. I think we all need to brace ourselves for a poor season, but there are steps that the program can take that would make 2012-13 less of an epic fail than last year was.

Obviously, since we have only three scholarships to give out, you can't afford to miss out on any of them. Our top priority, IMO, shouldn't be Terrance Jones, who is likely a one-and-done and has a terrible attitude. Our top target should be Jesuit junior PF Kyle Wiltjer, who, like Jones, has the whole country after him. Kid is a high-major talent, and in our own backyard. With a new coach and a new arena, hopefully we can wine and dine him... we're due, IMO, to keep at least ONE of these local prep All Americans close to home.

We also need a PG. Throwing freshmen points into the fire in the Pac-10 has brought us nothing but trouble, even the McDonald All American sort. I'm a little surprised we didn't go after Jesuit's Stephen Holt, who has great size and speed (and is headed down to St. Mary's), but that's okay. But hauling in an elite PG prospect with Longmire's scholarship, who can sit for a year and take over as a sophomore, would go a long way. As of right now we've only got one scholarship to give out that offseason -- throw everything we've got at whichever PG sits at the top of the coaches board and pray.

I think Wiltjer is just too good to pass up, and a high-major prospect PG is a necessity. With the last scholarship, I think you go best prospect available regardless of position.

Tualatin sophomore SG Jordan Tebbutt is a sophomore this year, thus fits into our next epic recruiting class of 2012. He already has scholarship offers from UCLA, Washington, Virginia, and USC. He'll be a top prospect nationally.

Jordan Tebbutt, freshman
Jamil Wilson, senior
EJ Singler, senior
Kyle Wiltjer, sophomore

With an experienced scorer coming off the bench as a sixth man. The rest of the bench appears destined to be freshmen, or JC kids. While not ideal, I think this is a roster that can at least compete at a Pac-10 level, which often isn't the case with us during rebuilding years. And obviously, these projections are all based on "what we know" -- players leaving early, or transferring, are always possibilities, but impossible to predict. We could very well end up with more scholarships to give out prior to 2012, but as of right now, we can't say that for sure.

Great post. After Kent's terrible in game coaching ability this is the #1 factor for me wanting him replaced. We are stuck in a devastating cycle that doesn't have an end. There's a good chance that when all the current guys are SRs we will have a good team. But what heppens when they are all gone & Kent has to replace EIGHT players? We will be forced to sit through another 2-3 years of horrible basketball till the new guys "get it". We have to break free of this cycle & it starts by getting a new coach. Otherwise we can get used to another 10 years one great year bookended by 5 garbage seasons.

That's the problem with most BB players, as opposed to FB players; they don't want to RS since they think it makes them look like they aren't college material, when in fact some aren't ready to contribute.

I would say try Jones' teammate, Terrance Ross, but he plays a position where we are already filled at (wing), even though he would probably become one of the most talented ones next to Jamil Wilson.

You won't find an "elite" player that wants to redshirt unless there is an injury or something. There's plenty of basketball teams willing to make them a star from year 1. The best scenario will be to bring in a couple freshman, have a couple current soph's redshirt, and transfer out the 1-2 players that either want to leave or don't fit into new coaches philosophy.
