Tinsley > Sim
Remember we were close to pulling in Tinsley, but it seemed like we went with Sim instead? Bad choice IMO. Tinsley isn't killing at Vandy, but his freshman year he was VERY solid. And right now he's looking pretty good against Murray State. Did I mention, he actually hits fastbreak layups?
Not trying to hate on Sim, because I actually played baseball with him growing up, but Tinsley would have beena much better choice.

Re: Tinsley > Sim
I knew I recognized that kid. I think you're forgetting something TK, Ernie Kent. I don't think either player was better than the other, it has to do with the kind of coaching they got once they got to college. Remember Sim's first 9-10 games? He was going for 20+ every game. Then what happened? EK starting limiting his minutes, subbing him in & out at the most odd times, & of course gave him no real coaching.
Like most kids, Sim was pretty good when he first showed up then... regressed & regressed till he's pretty much not any good anymore. Just typical.

Sim has one 20 point game in his career, and it is obvious that he would get less time this year with Armstead on the teamdthomas=ddixon wrote:I knew I recognized that kid. Is it just me, Or does Sim look scared when he is out there? He and Longmire should do layup drills all summer long or just start dunking it every time!

While that's probably true, brich75 is right, Sim seems kinda of timid and scared every time he's on the court.duckgrad99 wrote:Honestly, Tinsley probably wouldn't have done any better than Sim under Kent.

Re: Tinsley > Sim
Sims wasn't exactly a high profile recruit...... he was headed to Pepperdine before we offered him.
I never really thought that he was Pac 10 caliber.

Re: Tinsley > Sim
Sim was headed to Cal. Tinsley was actually the one headed to Pepperdine. Though that's not the point. Obviously this is just another chance to take shots at Kent. I don't see how players supposedly would regress under a coach. How can he possibly make somebody a worse player. They don't just start missing shots because of his coaching...They may not improve as much as you'd like, but I don't see how they can literally be getting worse. Obviously a lot of it is pure exaggeration, because as someone already said Sim was never scoring 20+ per game. Now you are just making up stats to rip on Kent. He's gone. There's no need to continue bashing him every chance as some people feel the urge to do.

Re: Tinsley > Sim
How does say Tinsley > Sim imply a bash on Kent? Sure, Kent has something to do with it, but Sim's timidness on the court and terribl layup percentage compared to Tinsley's more aggressive and finishing fast break style makes me wish we had Tinsley. I'll leave the Kent bashing to you guys if you think he's the cause for Sim's lack of development... However I think Tinsley was the better player overall.droop10 wrote:Sim was headed to Cal. Anyway, not a big deal. We got EJ Singler the year after, so no regrets.

Re: Tinsley > Sim
Tinsley was considered by most to be a better fit for Oregon than Sim was due to his style of play and aggressiveness. Sim is never going to be a major scorer here but he could at least shoot a better percentage when he has an open shot.UOducksTK1 wrote:How does say Tinsley > Sim imply a bash on Kent? I'm not blaming Kent personally for Sim's regression. Besides Kent's lack of devoloping players, I think it was just the whole mentality or attitude surrounding this team. It's not just Sim, its everyone. They look like they have no idea how to play basketball. And obviously a good deal of that falls on Kent. You can get mad at people for bashing Kent but its no worse than people blaming the players. Ultimately the coach is responible for how the team performs. He takes the blame. And did. Time to move on I guess.

Re: Tinsley > Sim
Sim last hit a three in the Cal game of the Pac-10 tourney. So... his last time out.
I saw a lot of Sim at Sunset HS. He's a very good shooter. Take the home finale against Wazzu as an example of why he's struggling so much: he comes in late in the first half, and pops a contested jumper. A minute later, Armstead finds him in the corner, and he nails a trey. So, he's 2/2, 5 quick points... and doesn't see the court again until TP takes his quad-bow with under a minute left in the game. There was NO consistent playing time for anyone on the bench under Ernie Kent, a criticism I've been leveling towards Ernie for yeeeeeaaaaars. Does anyone really expect a player to thrive when you play three minutes a half?
Drew Wiley's the same way. Wiley's not overly polished so the comparison isn't perfect, but they both live in fear of missing a shot. A missed trey means spending the rest of the game on the bench. Heck, on two or three occasions this year, Wiley came in early in the 1st half, MADE a trey, and never got off the bench again.
Sim absolutely needs to work on finishing near the rim, but a lot of his shooting woes can be traced back to confidence issues. When you live in fear of missing a shot, you're not going to be productive. Hopefully, the new coach won't have the worst substitution patterns in college basketball like the old one did.
Edit: As for Sim "getting worse" as time went on, I think that's a valid point. Sim was far more productive early on as a true freshman, when he was allowed to miss a shot and still play through. Sim is hardly the first player Kent has destroyed... luckily, there's still time to salvage his career.
