So what makes you all think you have to have been eliminated from the tourney to be considered as a candiated or looking for a job? That's stupid! You all are adding or eliminating your lists based on whose lost. There are bigger forces at play here.

I don't think so. I think many of us would like Turgeon or Dixon, they just happened to lose today. Who are the bigger forces at play? Izzo? Pitino? Would Oregon really throw a ton of money to get one of them?

Thats not what we're saying. Them losing means there can be an official. "Yes I'm interested" or "No I'm not." Instead of the avoidence & non addressing answers. With Dixon & Turgeon's seasons over they can be involved in real talks with the university.dereknad wrote:So what makes you all think you have to have been eliminated from the tourney to be considered as a candiated or looking for a job? will be interesting with all the people involved. Kilkenny, belloti. nike. the
u of o president, the company hired to do the search. cant believe that they
will all agree on the same person. hopefully they make a sound decision.
Im hoping for Dixon or Turgeon. Bennett at st. marys would be ok. not so
sure of Few. love to see Brad Stevens from butler. even the coach of
northern iowa would be great. i bet he goes to iowa tho. Id even love to
see Chris Collins asst coach from duke considered.

Re: Guys I am hearing Oregon is looking at
As far as Few goes, he would presumably be able to recruit even better than he has at Gonzaga from a Pac-10 school with all the facilities and the new arena that Oregon will have, not to mention his reputation of turning out consistent winners. And, lest we forget, his roots are in Oregon and he's a UO grad; that's a big part of why many have wanted him here, and it speaks volumes in terms of getting a person who doesn't see this job as simply a stepping stone to something greater.
If the Ducks have/do come knocking, he might just figure he's done all he can do at Gonzaga. I mean, he's been head coach there for 11 years and on the staff 10 years before that? Maybe he'd actually like another challenge, and what better one than back home.
I'd be happy with an excited Few, though I'm also glad if they are after other, bigger names as well.

Re: Guys I am hearing Oregon is looking at
Exactly how I feel. Few isn't at the top of my list but I would still be happy if we ended up with him. Everyones big negative with him is he coaches in a small conference, against weak competition so he gets tons easy wins, and the Pac10 would be too much for him. But like you said, if he came here he'd be able to get much better players to put in his system & have much better talent to work with. At Gonzaga he's only going to get so far in the tourney because his teams talent levels can only get so high. By the 2nd & 3rd rounds hes facing teams that are miles ahead of his team in talent.Greenblood wrote:As far as Few goes, he would presumably be able to recruit even better than he has at Gonzaga from a Pac-10 school with all the facilities and the new arena that Oregon will have, not to mention his reputation of turning out consistent winners. He's obviously a good coach if hes winning like he does (Highest winning % among active coaches). Do I think he's on the level of Dixon or Turgeon? No but he' a hell of a lot better than what we had the past 13 years.
Another plus is this is his home. No matter how much success he has here he probably wouldn't go anywhere.

Re: Guys I am hearing Oregon is looking at
I think a lot of people forget that Gonzaga is still a mid-major, too. They recruit well, but they don't recruit better than the major conference elite... heck, where would there talent level even rank within the Pac-10 right now (taking into account 7/10's of the conference was really young and rebuilding this year)? I think some people see that Few doesn't get to the Elite Eight and assume he's a poor Tournament coach, but the fact is that the Zags have been knocked out of the Tournament by #1 or #2 seeds 5 of his 10 trips to the Dance. There have been a couple poor losses (March is all about upsets, and the Zags have been upset) to Wyoming and Nevada a few years back, but IMO Gonzaga has mid-level BCS conference talent most years, and they perform like a mid-level BCS conference team. A couple Sweet 16s under Few, a lot of first weekend exits. Put Few in a major conference where he can recruit better talent and we'll see what happens. I posted this on eDuck the other day, but I'll paraphrase here: what would Few's tourney legacy be if he had beaten #1 Arizona in that 2 OT classic in '03, or #2 UCLA in the infamous Adam Morrison tear-fest game? Neither loss was Few's fault, and both were wire-to-wire heartbreaks where Gonzaga was on the edge of a breakthrough.
All that said, Few's not my #1 choice. I do, however, think he might be the University's top choice, so I'm trying to prepare myself for him. I think he gets an unfair shake by fans. A lot of people base opinions off of one or two weekends in March, and not Gonzaga's incredible body of work in the regular season. Yes, the WCC stinks most years, but Gonzaga's non-league schedule most of the time is incredible.

Re: Guys I am hearing Oregon is looking at
Mark Few Tourney History
2000 - Zags #10, wins against #7 & 2 seeds, lost to a 6 seed
2001 - Zags #12, wins against #5 & 13 seeds, lost to a 1 seed
2002 - Zags #6, lost to a 11 seed
2003 - Zags #9, wins against #8, lost to a 1 seed
2004 - Zags #2, wins against #15, lost to a 10 seed
2005 - Zags #3, wins against #14, lost to a 6 seed
2006 - Zags #3, wins against #14 & 6 seed, out coached and chocked against #2 seed UCLA
2007 - Zags #10, lost to a 7 seed
2008 - Zags #7, lost to a 10 seed
2009 - Zags #4, wins against #13 &12 seed, lost to a 1 seed
2010 - Zags #8, wins against #9, lost to a 1 seed
His most impressive results were probably in 2000
Most disappointing would have to be 2004 & 2005
They had a chance to do something special in 2006. Adam Morrison was the best player in college basketball that year. But they chocked against an overrated UCLA team and I do think he was out coached by Ben Howland.
It's hard for me to think that Mark Few is the answer. He has a sexy name and has done well for the Zags, but his teams aren't known for defense and rely on jacking up 3's and I have seen enough of that from Ernie Kent lead teams.

Re: Guys I am hearing Oregon is looking at
I would rather have a Dixon or Turgeon since their teams tend to be balanced offensively and defensively. Gonzaga hasn't proven that they can stop a good offensive team. We've seen enough bad defenses at Oregon.Boom wrote:Mark Few Tourney History

Re: Guys I am hearing Oregon is looking at
I would add this; Few's accomplishments with lessor talent was good enough to get into the tournement this year as the 2nd place team from a mid-major conference. The mighty Pac ten also only had two teams qualify. That speaks volums about his ability to command respect from the college basketball world and that would transfer immediatly to Oregon. should he come here. I think given slightly better atheletes, he would be able to break through that glass ceiling he finds himself under - that is coaching at such a small school in a no-name league.

Re: Guys I am hearing Oregon is looking at
Well, I strongly disagree that his teams rely on the three ball. If the Zags are shooting well Few won't turn off the green light, but his offense is nothing like Kent's. Few involves his big men and finds and exploits match-up problems on the perimeter.Boom wrote:Mark Few Tourney History

In 2005, Gonzaga lost to a Bobby Knight Texas Tech team by 2. That's not a bad loss. His worst losses were in '04 to Nevada -- who was good, but shouldn't have been able to beat Gonzaga -- and 2002, when they lost to #11 seed Wyoming.
