Some Kilkenny comments

To set the record strait, the Tark wasn't a cheater. John Calipari he wasn't! The NCAA didn't like that he called them out on the way the did business, and they also didn't like that in the early 70's he did what was best for his Long Beach St team and started more then 3 African American players, which at that time was an unwritten rule. The NCAA is, as we all know, a bunch of bully's and hypocrites who like to push teams around. If he was such a cheater, then how did he win his harassment suit against the NCAA, and they paid him 2.5 mill? His biggest problem was pissing off the NCAA from day one and they followed him around for the rest of his career trying to get him for any and everything.

Just months before the 1976–77 season, the NCAA placed UNLV on two years' probation for "questionable practices." Although the alleged violations dated back to 1971—before Tarkanian became coach—the NCAA pressured UNLV into suspending Tarkanian as coach for two years. Tarkanian sued, claiming the suspension violated his right to due process. In September 1977, a Nevada judge issued an injunction which reinstated Tarkanian as coach. The case eventually made it all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States, which ruled in 1988 that while the NCAA had the right to discipline its member schools, but required that due process be followed—effectively upholding the original 1977 injunction.[2]

In the decade between the original suspension and the Supreme Court ruling, it was revealed that the NCAA's enforcement process was stacked heavily in the NCAA's favor—so heavily, in fact, that it created a perception that there was no due process. The enforcement staff was allowed to build cases on hearsay, and shared few of their findings with the targeted school. The resulting negative publicity led the NCAA to institute a clearer separation between the enforcement staff and the infractions committee, as well as a system for appeals. Also, hearsay evidence was no longer admissible in infractions cases.[3]

After being fired from the Spurs, Tarkanian sued the NCAA, claiming it had harassed him for over two decades. The harassment, Tarkanian claimed, started when he wrote a newspaper column alleging that the NCAA was more willing to punish less-prominent schools than big-name schools. Although the NCAA did not admit harassing Tarkanian, it settled out of court in 1998, paying him $2.5 million.

Yeah, maxduck, I saw that comment by Lariviere. Put together with Kilkenny's comments, unless they're just telling us bald-faced lies (and how would that speak to the "integrity" they're after?), I'd say there must be something to it -- and perhaps not simply unreasonable $ demands, at least based on the president's statement.

I didn't even read the Oregonian's article because like most things it was probably written in a way to make the Ducks seem horrible. I thought Kilkenny sounded pretty sincere about how difficult the process was and how the public and media were running with rumors and making it harder. The "5 NC coaches" were more of an answer to a critic.

That statement really pisses me off. Was Kilkenny trying to save face? If national championship coaches were interested, why weren't they hired? It's also a bad time to say that, right after you hire Altman.

There is probably another 25 or more coaches to add to this list. He didn't say 'champions' as in the winner of the Championship game. He said championship coaches. Also, there are other divisions that play for national championships, I believe.
I have to believe salary demands probably kept the discussions from progressing. With the media claiming the UO was going to pay record setting amounts, a lot of ears perked up.

Well, you love to "quote facts" and use Wikipedia as your source? Jerry Tarkanian was never associated with anything other than turmoil...At best, a problem child of coaches...He put out good teams, but at UNLV left a number of questionable practices behind as his legacy...I dont know for a fact that he cheated..but, likewise, you dont know that he didnt.

Not to halt a good ol' fashion conspiracy theory, but there are at least 4 or 5 national championships awards every single year in men's basketball. One of the 5 "national championship coaches" Kilkenny was talking about was obviously Mike Dunlap, who won two titles at Metro State in Colorado.

Someone previously alluded that Kilkenny's comment was somewhat ambigious and national championship runners-up would qualify under his statement, and I agree. Which means PJ Carlisemo and Brad Stevens would fit the bill, so that's three of the five.

As for the other two, I don't know. Billy Donovan might have been one of the two that were 'kinda interested', but ultimately shook us off (Stevens being the other). I imagine PJ is one of the coaches that our President said he wouldn't have signed off on.
