Those statements are why you have zero credibility. You contradict yourself in the same post. Altman is a lateral move based on....? Your opinion? I guess I can understand why you are so agnry over Kent's firing. You really liked the guy, whatever, but guess what? He's gone. Time to move on. If you're a Duck fan, why can't you just accept & support Altman? He's a great COACH & is gonna be successful here. Again, just move on dude.

I have purpously made myself not reply to any of your posts over the last 3-4 months in hopes that you would calm down, and get back to being a Duck fan first, and Kent supporter second. Unfortunately I don't think that this is going to happen right away, and I suggest you take some time away from boards and forums. At this point, you are only here to try to get support for your anti-EverythingButKent. In the process you are making others concern themselves with having to attempt to get you back on track supporting Duck Basketball (and for the most part everyone is trying very cordially) but you are making every effort to fight everyone about anything that has to do with supporting our new direction.

Take a step back, and look at the general concensus, see how many people are outraged about the Kent firing (I think you will find that they are the VAST minority) and realize that generally speaking, when the overwhelming majority of people agree with a decision, it was probably for the better good.

I hope you are able to get over this, and come back and contribute like you were able to before this all started happening.

I understand what you're saying. Your posts are usually smart. The problem is that you're constantly chirping and chiding everyone else. Your arguments have been made. Now, I'm not saying shut up, but could you at least not call out people yet again for saying something positive about Altman or negative about Kent in a thread about an important recruit? So many of our basketball threads devolve into this same argument because you refuse to just be okay that people are going to fervently disagree with you. Come say I told you so in a couple years if you want. In the meantime, maybe just swallow what happened and let the Kent era be in the past. It's time to focus on Altman and HIS team.

I always have thought that pudge was Markus Kent, is that not right? If so, no big deal if he's standing up for Ernie, but you should still give the new coach a chance before slamming him.

This late in the game if he can last Polee and Loyd will say a lot about him as a recruiter. In the story Mops put up on DT, Loyd sure sounds excited to get to Eugene and check it out.

Altman may not be a step up from Kent, we don't know yet. The boosters, president, fans, etc. want to get the basketball program to the next level with more consistency and Kent had plenty of opportunity to do that but the program has declined over the last few years, it has not improved. The fan base has declined and with a new (very expensive) arena opening that is not acceptable. Obviously the University tried to get the big name but were unable to so they went with who they felt was the next best thing as too much time had elapsed. Altman will have expectations he will need to meet otherwise he will be out the door as well. It is too early to criticize Altman as he has not coached a single game or had any time to recruit players yet. Kent was instrumental in returning the program to winning (aside from recently) and getting to the tournament but just as the football program has done the university wants to take basketball to the next level and be known for being a competitive if not elite program in all sports, primarily the big 3 and track and field/cross country. Look how quickly Horton has got the baseball team going and how successful Chip has been in such a short period of time, hopefully Altman can have similar or better results. I don't think there are many Duck fans who disliked Kent, we were just unhappy with the performance of the team and it all starts with the head coach. I don't know if there are plans to do so already but hopefully the University plans to honor Kent in some way.

Here's the bottom line, as I see it:

Kent did some good things for Oregon. No question. But there's really no debating the fact that the first half of his tenure was better than his second, and he stopped doing the things over the last 5-6 years that made us so successful initially under him.

When Greg Graham was an assistant here, we ran the ball, and we forced teams to play our way. And we were good. We had the players and the system down pat. Fastbreak, fastbreak, fastbreak. We didn't play defense, but that was okay, because we could outscore teams. Then Greg Graham left, and took his fastbreak offense with him... and we stopped running. We became boring/stale on offense, still shooting a lot of treys, but no longer capitalizing on the fastbreak points that Ridnour made a career off of. WE HAD THE FASTEST PLAYER IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL IN AARON BROOKS, AND ERNIE MADE HIM WALK THE BALL UP THE COURT FOR FOUR YEARS! And we still did not play defense. So, all of a sudden, we became a team that didn't run, didn't play defense, and ran a poor halfcourt offense (which was a criticism when we were forced to slow down during the Graham/Ridnour years) that relied on jump shooters. We were a pretty bad program from 2004-present, save for a two month stretch in 2007 when the entire team caught fire and we rode some of the best three point shooting I've ever seen to a strong regular finish, stormed through the Pac tourney, and lucked out a little by playing Miami (Ohio), Winthrop, and UNLV on our way to the Elite Eight.

What's the cliche in the NFL -- teams need to swap coaches every ten years before things get stale? Same thing here. Ernie is not a bad coach per se, but things simply got stale. Outside of that glorious shooting performance in late '07, we have done NOTHING since Rid left, and that's a sign of a coach and a program who both need a change of scenery. There was almost NO CHANCE of turning this thing around with Ernie as coach, because he relies so much on the three ball and we have a poor jump shooting line-up. And we still don't play defense. Or run.

So we brought in a coach that might be able to win with this group. He preaches defense, and he utilizes his post players. Both things this roster is capable of doing, both of which being about the only way a coach could win with this bunch, and neither of which Ernie would have done.

Oregon may or may not reach two Elite Eights in the next 13 years, or win a Pac-10 regular season title in the next 13 years, but I'd also bet that they don't finish in 9th or 10th place THREE TIMES like Ernie did in his final SIX YEARS as head coach.

/ranting opinion.

I don't think there is much debate that Kent needed to go.

But, you can debate how the coaching search went and who we hired.

But it doesn't really matter anymore.

It is what it is and our coach is Dana Altman.

Time will tell if it was a good hire or not.

He's the 5-foot-9, two-sport bundle of energy chiseled into a sinewy frame that helped Las Vegas Bishop Gorman win 102 games in four seasons, including 60 in the last two. He was also a first-team all-state performer on the gridiron. (Loyd played defensive back and returned kicks.)

"No matter where he goes; Johnathan will help a team," Rice said. "He wants a program that is ready for the [NCAA] tournament."

Oh for sure Altman is a big step up from EK on the X's and O's, and if you ever get a chance watch his instrumental video. If you understand basketball, you will be impressed with his knowledge and the way he teaches. Players won't take 4 years to achieve a semblance of there potential like they did under Kent. Now can he recruit as well, that remains to be seen, but wins go a long way in landing recruits.

Sounds good. Him being an all-stater in football means he has some toughness to him, which could only help him in going against bigger, more physical guards.

I agree. i always liked Ernie. met him once and he was nice.
was never one who thought he could coach in the half court.
If his teams couldnt shoot then that usually meant trouble.
I think Altman fits with what oregon needs to do. Where do i find
the instrumental video of him. I checked most of the you tube stuff
i most likely missed it. thanks in advance....duckfan22
